Lesson Plan of Masculine, Feminine and Neuter Gender
English Grade IV
Students’ Learning Outcomes
·
Classify and change the
gender of more nouns from the immediate and extended environment
(masculine/feminine/neuter).
Information for Teachers
·
Refer to the information for
teachers given in grade 3 lesson for the definition of three types of gender
nouns.
·
The three genders are
masculine, feminine, and neuter. He is a masculine pronoun; she is a feminine
pronoun; it is a neuter pronoun.
·
The masculine and feminine
gender nouns may be differentiated from each other in three ways.
a)
By the use of different word.
(Examples: husband/wife, lord/lady, sir/madam,
uncle/aunt, son/daughter)
b)
By a different ending.
(Examples: actor/actress, lion/lioness, tiger/tigress,
host/hostess
c)
By forming compound words.
(Examples:
gentleman/gentlewoman, grandfather/grandmother, landlord/landlady
Material / Resources
Chalk/marker, board,
worksheet
Worm up activity
·
Start the lesson by writing some
nouns (male, female, neuter) on the board. Ask the students about the gender of
each noun.
·
Ask the students to give more
gender (masculine, feminine, neuter) nouns.
·
Do the activity for about
8-10minutes.
Development
Activity 1
·
Tell the students that
masculine and feminine gender of nouns can be differentiated from each other in
three ways.
·
Divide the board into three
sections for the three ways.
·
Write examples on the board
as you teach. Say loudly each noun with the students to teach pronunciation.
·
Ask the students if they know
the masculine or feminine nouns from each of three ways.
·
Ask the students to write the
gender nouns in their notebooks.
Activity 2
·
Divide the class in such a
way that each row of students becomes a team.
·
Ask each team one by one to
give a neuter noun.
·
The team which gives a wrong
neuter noun.
·
The team which gives a wrong
neuter noun loses a point. The team which write a correct noun but spellings
are incorrect loses half point. The team which gives more correct nouns wins.
·
Play the game for 5-8 minutes.
·
Ask the class to clap for the
winning team. (There can be maybe ‘winning teams’.
Activity 3
·
Give the students worksheet
or write on the board.
·
Give clear instruction to the
students and ask them to do the task.
·
Help and assist the students
where necessary.
Sum up / Conclusion
·
Quickly revise all the three
ways in which masculine and feminine gender nouns are differentiated from each
other.
Assessment
·
Assess the students’ ability
to classify nouns according to their gender through their responses in the worm
up activity.
·
Assess the students’
understanding of neuter gender nouns through their responses in the activity 2.
·
Arrange a written quiz after
a week to assess whether the students are able to change gender of nouns from
immediate and extended environment.
Follow up
·
Write five feminine gender
nouns on the board. Ask the students to write their masculine gender nouns.
