LESSON NO. 33-CONVERSION OF EXCLAMATORY SENTENCES FROM DIRECT TO INDIRECT SPEECH

Rules:

1.      Reported verb should be changed in the following manner: 

2.      Inverted commas should be replaced by ‘that’.

3.      Change the Reporting Verb said into exclaimed, cried out, wished, prayed, confessed, applauded, called to witness, etc.

4.      The exclamatory sentence is turned into a statement and linker that is used in the indirect speech.

5.      If the exclamatory sentence begins with what or how to denote extreme emotion, it becomes great or very according to sense. Normally great is placed before a noun and very is placed before an Adjective e.

6.      Omit all the interjections and exclamations and cover their sense by means of suitable Adverbs or Adverb Phrases, such as, with joy, with sorrow, with regret, with impatience, with contempt, with delight, etc.

7.      Use the conjunction that to introduce the Reported Speech.

8.      If an Exclamatory Sentences begins with words like ‘How’ or ‘What’ omit them in the indirect form of speech. Express their sense by using the words great, big or very, etc.

9.      Complete the sentence in indirect form of speech, if it is incomplete in the direct form of speech.

10.  In direct speech, the sentence ends with a full-stop (.) and not an exclamatory mark (!). it is applicable for all sorts of sentences as all these are Assertive sentences or statements in indirect speech.

Note: in the indirect speech, we say wished good morning, wished good evening, wished good afternoon, etc. but we say bade good bye, bade farewell, bad good night, etc.

Indirect

1.      She said, “Good-bye friends!”

She bade good-bye to her friends.

2.      He said, “Farewell, my comrades!”

He bad farewell to his comrades.

3.      He said to me, “Good morning! How do you do?”

He wished me good morning and asked how I did.

 

4.      He said, “What a beautiful sight!”

He exclaimed with joy that it was a very beautiful.

 

5.      You said, “How beautiful this flower is!”

You exclaimed that flower was very beautiful.

6.      I said, “How sad he is!”

 

I exclaimed that he was very sad.

 

7.      He said, “What a great misery!”

He exclaimed withy surprise that was a great misery.

8.      The boy said, “Hurrah! My brother stands first!”

 

The boy cried out with delight that his brother stood first.

9.      He said, “Alas! How foolish I have been!”

He confessed with regret that he had been very foolish.

10.  She said, “Alas! I am undone”

She exclaimed with sorrow that she was undone.

11.  He said, “Hurrah! We have won the match”.

He exclaimed with joy that they had won the match.

12.  He said, “Alas! My father has died.”

He exclaimed with sorrow that his father had died.

13.  He said, “How lovely these flowers are.”

He exclaimed with wonder that those flowers were very lovely.

14.  He said, “How foolish this boy is.”

He exclaimed with wonder that that boy was very foolish.

15.  “Help! Help!” shouted the woman.

The woman shouted for help.
