Change the number of irregular nouns
Information for Teacher
Irregular Nouns that don't follow the rules.Most nouns can be made plural by adding 'an' or'en'
There are some nouns that form the plural differently, some nouns change their vowels in the middle of the singular form, when forming the plural.
Example:
Goose/geese, foot/feet, man/men, etc.
Several nouns form the plural
by adding the letters –en or –ren.
Example: ox/oxen,
child/children, etc.

There are a number of animals
that have the same singular and plural form.
Example: deer/deer,
sheep/sheep, fish/fish, etc.
·
A scavenger hunt is a game in
which the organizer prepares a list of specific items. The participants of the
game try to find all the items on the list. The team or individual who
completes the list first, wins
Material / Resources
Papers with items listed for the scavenger hunt, colored paper stars work sheet, chalks/markers, board, textbook, (if photocopy facility is not available, write the sentences on the board).
Worm Up Activity
·
Begin the lesson by
announcing that the whole class is going on a scavenger hunt. Explain to the
students; What a scavenger hunt
is?
·
Divide the class into small
groups Give each group the paper with things to be found such as books, pens,
pencils, erasers, scales, shoes, etc.
·
Prepare this list before
starting the lesson.
·
Tell the groups that they
also have to write, on the given paper, the singular or plural of those things.
Give the groups 5 minutes for the hunt.
·
The group which gathers all
the things and writes the singular or plurals first, wins.
·
After the game finishes, tell
the students that there are some nouns which make plural differently from all
the nouns learnt so far. Tell the class that they will learn those nouns today.

Activity
Tell the students about the nouns that change the middle vowels when pluralized ( see the rule in information for teachers above).

Write the examples on the
board. Underline the middle vowels that change it into a plural form.
·
Similarly tell the class
(with example) about the nouns that take –en in plural forms and the nouns that
remain same in both singular and plural forms.

Make pairs of students or
divide them into groups.
·
Distribute worksheets among
them. (The worksheet is provided at the
end of the lesson plan.)
·
Ask them to follow the
instruction given in the worksheet to do the activity.
Sum Up/ Conclusion
·
Conclude the lesson by
repeating how some nouns form irregular plurals.

·

words to the students and tell them to write their plural after rearranging
them.

·
Ask the students to cut out
five pictures from old magazines or newspapers and paste them in their
notebooks 9 continued activity from the previous lesson)

Ask them to label them with
the singular and plural forms. Tell students to paste pictures of the nouns
they just learnt in the lesson. You can name this activity as plural Book.
