Lesson Plan of Introduction of Human Body (Stomach)

General Science Grade IV

Students’ Learning Outcomes

·         Identify major parts (Stomach) of human body.
·         State functions of major parts (Stomach) of the body.

Information for Teachers

·         Stomach is a large bag-like part which stores and digests the food.

Worm up Activity

·         Ask the students if they can name different parts of their bicycle. Write students’ responses on the board.
·         Tell the students that as the bicycle has many parts, our body is also made of many parts. These parts are called organs.
·         Ask the students to name all the organs of body which they can see and touch. Write students’ responses on board.
·         Make them focus that these are the external parts of their body e.g. ear, eye, teeth, and skin.
·         Explain that like these external parts there are some parts inside the body which also perform variety of functions.

Development

Activity:

·         Ask the students questions like these:
1.       Have you seen any animal eating all the times?
(Expected response: Some animals e.g. Insects eat without any gap)
2.       Do we also eat all the times?
(Expected response: No)
·         Introduce the role of stomach in the storage and digestion of food. Explain the digestive action of stomach by making line-drawing.
·             The stomach is J-shaped and it can expand to temporarily store food.
·             Partial digestion of the food takes place here. The churning action of the stomach muscles
    physically breaks down the food.

·             The stomach releases acids and enzymes for the chemical breakdown of food. The enzyme     pepsin is responsible for protein breakdown.
·             The stomach releases food into the small intestine in a controlled and regulated manner.

·         Chewed food passes from the esophagus into the stomach; the flow is somewhat regulated by the esophageal sphincter but more importantly depends on how fast you eat and if you are eating both solids and liquids. The passage of food from the stomach to the small intestine is controlled by the pyloric sphincter. The crushed and mixed food is liquefied to form chyme and is pushed through the pyloric canal into the small intestine.

Sum up / Conclusion

·         The stomach stores and digests the food.
Assessment
·         Draw following table on the board.
·         Instruct the students how to fill the table.
·         They will explain their understanding by completing the table

Follow up

·         Ask each student to choose one of the organs taught in this lesson. All students will make drawings of the chosen organs. They will also write the function of the organ.
