Lesson Plan of Countable, Uncountable and Collective Nouns

English Grade IV

Students’ Learning Outcomes

·         Recall and demonstrate the use of more common, countable and uncountable nouns from the immediate and extended environment.
·         Identify and use collective nouns.

Information for Teachers

·         Refer to the information for Teachers given in Grade 3 lesson for the definition of the countable, uncountable and common nouns.
·         Countable nouns:


 are individual people, animals, places, things, or ideas which can be counted.
 





    Uncountable nouns: 

 are not individual objects, so they cannot be counted.
·         Collective nouns refer to things or people as a unit or group. Nouns that name a group of people, places, things or animals are called collective nouns.
  A collective noun is
a word used to name a group of people, animals, or things.
·         Similar to an UN-countable noun and the opposite of a countable noun.
·         Example: family; a class of students, team; a crowd of people/ a crowd; a galaxy of stars/ a galaxy; a fleet of ships/ a fleet; a colony of ants; a pride of lions; a bunch of flowers/bananas; a parade of elephants.

 

Material / Resources

Pictures (cut from newspaper, magazines) of crowd of people, students in a class, cricket team, herd of sheep/goat, bunch of flowers, a family etc. chalk/marker, board and textbook

Worm up activity

·         Review previously learnt types of nouns by asking the students: “What are nouns? Give some examples of common nouns. What are countable and uncountable nouns?”
·         Invite a few students to the board and ask them to write examples of common nouns, countable and uncountable nouns.
·         Help the students to recall the concepts if they have difficulty in recalling.
·         Show the students a picture showing examples of collective nouns.
·         Ask them what they see in the picture.
·         Repeat with all the pictures.
·         Tell the students that they are seeing a new type of noun. Tell them that collective nouns are used to show a group of people, places, things or animals.
·         Ask one student to stand up. Say, this is a student.
·         Now ask 4/5 students to stand up now they say: “They are students” (Encourage the students to answer, for example, you may prompt the students by pointing towards students and saying: “They are?”
·         Now ask the whole class to stand up. Write the sentence: “ This is a--------of students”
·         Read the sentence aloud. Point towards the students as you read the sentence \. Ask the students to fill in the blank.
·         The students may answer: a class of students. Encourage them if they give the right answer. Gently correct them if they give the wrong answer.

Development



Activity 1

·         Write the definition of collective nouns on the board with examples.
·         Write ten examples of collective nouns on the board. Say aloud each collective noun and teach pronunciation. Ask students to write the definition and examples of collective nouns in their notebook.

Activity 2

·         Draw the word bank and write the sentences on the board.
·         Read aloud the sentences with the whole class and ask the students to guess the meaning of each sentence.
·         Ask the students to guess the collective noun for each bank.
·         Do the exercise as a whole class activity. Appreciate the students when they give correct answers. Gently correct them if they give incorrect answers.
·         When all sentences are done, ask the students to copy the sentences in their notebook.

Activity 3

·         Write a few collective nouns on the board. For example: a herd of sheep/cows, a group of people, a pride of lions, a flock of birds, a shoal of fish, a bunch of flowers/grass, a colony of ants, etc.
·         Divide the class into 4/5 groups.
·         Now ask the students to make sentences or write a short story using the collective nouns. The group that finishes first wins.

Sum up / Conclusion

·         Give the students a quick recap by asking them: “What are collective nouns? What are some examples of collective nouns?”

Assessment

·         Assess the students’ ability to recall and demonstrate use of common, countable and uncountable nouns through the correct responses given in the worm up activity.
·         Assess the students’ ability to use collective nouns through their correct responses in activity 2 and activity 3.
·         Assess the students’ understanding of collective nouns through their responses in the sum up session.
·         Arrange written quizzes to assess the students’ understanding of common, proper, countable and collective nouns.
·         Reinforce the concept in other lessons. Point out collective nouns whenever you find one in the textbook or other reading materials.

Follow up

·         Ask the students to write in their notebooks all the collective nouns they find in the chapter they are currently reading.
·         Ask them to learn the collective nouns learnt in class and the ones given in the textbook.
·         Fill in the blanks using the correct collective noun from the word bank.
