Recognize that pronouns agree
with their nouns in gender and number.
Information for Teachers
·
Pronoun a
word that takes the place of a noun.
·
Number
refers to whether a pronoun or noun is singular or plural.
·
A pronoun
must agree with its noun in number and gender.
·
Use a
singular pronoun to refer to a singular noun.
(Example: The
mother is cooking dinner for her children. (Mother-singular noun, her-singular
pronoun)
·
Use a
plural pronoun to refer to a plural noun.
(Example:
Ayesha and Asma are playing with their younger sister. (Ayesha and Asma- plural
nouns, their-plural pronoun)
Material / Resources
Chalk/marker, board
Worm up activity
·
Start the lesson by reviewing
pronoun-gender agreement. Ask the students questions:
Ø If a noun in sentence is masculine, what should
be its pronoun; masculine, feminine or neuter?
Ø What are the masculine pronouns?
Ø What are the feminine and neuter pronouns?
Ø Should the gender of a pronoun always be same
as the gender of its noun?
·
Tell the class that pronouns
must also agree with their nouns in number.
·
Draw two columns on the
board. Write singular pronouns on top of the first column. Write plural
pronouns on top of the second column.
·
Make a list of singular
pronouns with the help of students under the heading of singular pronouns.
·
Make a list of the plural
pronouns with the help of students under the heading of plural pronouns.
·
Write a sentence on the board
underline the noun and ask the students if the noun is singular or plural. Ask
them to look at the gender of the noun.
·
Circle the pronoun and ask
the students if the pronoun is singular or plural. Ask them if the gender of
the pronoun is same as the gender of the noun.(pronoun number agrees with its
noun) (Example: Huma is stitching her dress)
·
Repeat the exercise with
another example (pronoun number doesn’t agree with its noun in this example).
Ask the students to give the correct pronoun by looking at the noun.(Example:
Zain and Omer are going to see his grandparents.
Development
Activity 1
·
Write the sentences on the
board.
·
Tell students to look at the
nouns and pronouns in the sentences. Ask them to write agree if the noun and
its pronoun are the same in number (singular noun, singular pronoun/plural
noun, plural pronoun). Ask them to write disagree if the noun and its pronoun
are not same in number.
·
Don’t sentence on the board
for the students’ understanding.
·
Move about to monitor
students’ work and provide help.
·
If students finish the work
quickly, tell them to write the correct pronouns for all the incorrect
pronouns.
Activity 2
·
When students have finished
the activity
1.
Tell them that they will do
another activity for practice.
·
Write sentences on the board
one by one.
·
Tell students to look at the
each noun in the sentences. Ask them to circle the correct pronoun in each
sentence.
·
Call students one by one to
the board and ask them to do one sentence. Appreciate students who do right and
politely correct students who could not give correct answer.
·
After correcting or
re-explaining the concept to students who could not give correct answer, give
them another sentence to do.
Activity 3
·
Look at the nouns and pronouns in the sentences.
Write agree if the noun and its pronoun are same in number. Write disagree if
the noun and its pronoun are not same in number.

Boys are eating their dinner now. ___-agree.

Mr. Saleem and Mr. Hameed ride his horses’ daily
_____-disagree.
3.
Farah is sleeping in her bed. ______agree.

Sum up / Conclusion
·
Quickly review the lesson.
Tell the students that if a noun is singular its pronoun is always singular. If
a noun is plural its pronoun must always be plural.
·
Write a few singular and
plural nouns on the board. For example, cat, tables, girls, friend, balloons,
pens, etc. on the board.
·
Ask the students to tell
which pronouns will be used in place of these nouns.
Assessment
·
Check students’ ability to
recall the masculine, feminine and neuter pronouns and singular and plural nouns
learnt earlier in the worm up activity.
·
Assess how the students will
recognize that pronouns agree in the number through the activity 1.
·
Assess students’ ability to
identify the correct pronoun.
·
Assess how students will
recognize pronouns number agreement in the follow up activities.
·
Assess students’
understanding of pronouns number agreement by giving them a short test.

·
Look at the number of each
noun in the sentences. Circle the correct pronouns in each sentence.

Follow up
·
Give students five short
sentences. The pronouns in the sentences don’t agree in number with their
nouns. Underline the nouns and pronouns.
·
Ask them to rewrite the
sentences so that the pronouns agree with their nouns in number. You can also
do this activity in the3 following class.
