Material / Resources

Chalk/marker, board

Worm up activity

·         Start the lesson by asking students: What are pronouns? What are masculine? What are neuter nouns? Are he, his, him masculine pronouns or feminine pronouns? Are she and her masculine pronouns or feminine pronouns? Which pronoun is used for neuter gender? Etc.
·         Encourage students if they give correct answers. If students give incorrect answer to them. Ask them if they have understood.
·         Make three columns on the board. Write ‘masculine pronouns’ on top first column. Write ‘feminine pronouns’ on top of second column. Write ‘neuter pronouns’ on top of the third column. Write the relevant pronouns under each heading.
·         Remind them that pronouns must agree with their nouns in gender.
·         Write a sentence on the board. The sentence should have both a noun and a pronoun in it (to teach the concept of nouns-pronouns agreement).
·         Ask the students to recognize the noun in the sentence (underline the noun as students say it).
·         Ask them: What is the gender of this noun? Tell them to recognize the pronoun (underline the pronoun as students say it). Ask the students to look at the three columns and tell whether the pronoun agrees with its noun (pronoun agrees with its noun in this example)
·         Repeat the exercise with another example (pronoun doesn’t agree with its noun in this example). Ask the students to give the correct pronoun by looking at the gender of the noun.
(Example: Father is working in the office. (Correct answer: his)
Draw the following table on the board and ask the students to copy it in their notebooks:
Noun (singular)

Pronoun
Masculine (e.g. Ali, father, brother, batsman)
He, his and him
Feminine (e.g. Alina, sister, aunt)
She and her
Neuter noun (e.g. table, cat, chair, lion, lioness)
It and its
