Lesson Plan of Mind-Maps English Grade IV

Lesson Plan of Mind-Maps

English Grade IV

Students’ Learning Outcomes

·         Select and use some strategies to organize ideas for writing such as simple mind-map etc.

Information for Teachers

·         Mind-mapping means thinking of everything you can about a topic, and then writing it down or drawing it.
·         In the ‘idea clouds’ below, accept and write down all the ideas that students come up with for the topic, “Animals of land”.

·         A mind map is a graphical mode to embody thoughts and notions. It is a pictorial intellectual device that helps organizing information, helping you to better examine, understand, produce, remembrance and produce new ideas.
·         Clustering is a kind of prewriting that permits you to sightsee many ideas as soon as they arise to you. Like brainstorming or free connecting, clustering allows you to activate without clear concepts. To begin to cluster, choose a word that is central to your assignment.
·         Four ways to pre-writing strategies:
1.       Brainstorming
2.       Clustering
3.       Making lists
4.       Asking yourself questions
·         Remember there are no good or bad ideas. Just write whatever comes to the students’ mind.
·         The diagram used below to gather ideas for writing is called cluster brain storming.
·         More ideas are linked and extended in a mind map.
·         Mind maps should be made within a specified period of time usually no more than 3-5 minutes.
·         Encourage students to give their responses quickly without thinking for too long.
·         Mind – mapping and brainstorming are slightly different techniques.
·         While teaching the lesson, the teacher should also consult the textbook at all the steps where and when required.

Material / Resources

Chalk/marker, board, charts, textbook

Worm up activity

·         Draw a circle on the board and write ‘Animals of land’ in it as shown in the figure below.
·         Ask the students to tell what comes to their mind while looking at this topic.
·         Tell them a ‘dream school’ would be one where everything is the way they want it.
·         Help them understand that while the real school is the same for all of them, the dream school will be different for each one. Akbar’s dream school may have a swimming pool and Sheer’s dream school may have a TV to watch cartoons!
·         Write all the words/phrases that come from the students with an arrow out of the circle on the board.
·         Tell the students that this activity is called cluster brainstorming.
·         This activity can be used for getting ideas for writing.
Note:  Sometimes students have an idea but don’t have the words to express it in English. Allow them to speak in native language and then translate it for them.

Development

Activity 1

·         After discussion ask the students to discuss in pairs and write all the brainstormed words in their notebooks.
·         Monitor and help the students and give your input where required.
·         When the students are finished with the assigned work, ask the students randomly to come up with the words in terms of importance.

Activity 2

·         Ask the students to use 5 of the above words in their own sentences.
·         Monitor and help the students in making sentences.
·         Tell them to be careful about the capitalization, punctuation and correct spellings in their sentences.

Sum up / Conclusion

·         Ask the students:
Ø  What is the cluster brainstorming?
Ø  How can they take notes for writing?
Ø  How does it help them in thinking of more ideas?

Assessment

·         Ask the students to exchange their work with their peers and check each other’s work for correct spellings, capitalization and punctuation.
·         Ask the students to write the sentences again in the light of their peers’ feedback.

Follow up

·         Ask the students to use above information and write a paragraph on ‘Animals of land’.
