Identify and make sentences
to show instructions, commands and strong feelings.
Information for Teachers
·
The four types of sentences
in the English language include:
o Declarative (Instruction) sentence.
o Imperative (Command) sentence.
o Interrogative (Question) sentence.
o Exclamatory (Strong Feeling) sentence.
·
Declarative (Instructions) sentences:
o The declarative/ Instruction sentence makes a
statement. It tells the reader/listener how to do something such as cook a
recipe, build a model, put furniture together, play a game or get from one
place to another, follow sign boards, etc.
·
Imperative (Commands) sentences:
o The imperative (commands) sentences give a
direction or a command. Such as Speak! Finish your home work! Let’s eat! Close the door!
·
Exclamatory (Strong Feelings)
Sentences:
o The exclamatory/ strong Feelings sentences are a
statement that shows strong emotion. Such as
o “It is too risky to climb that mountain!”
o “I acquired an A on my book report!”
·
Interrogative (Questions) Sentences:
o The interrogative sentence asks a question.
Such as
o This type of sentence often begins with who,
what, where, when, why, how, or do, and it ends with a question mark.
Material / resources
Chalk/marker, board, textbook
Worm up activity
·
Call some students one by one
to act like a teacher and give instructions to the class fellows using a
classroom instruction word in the box.
·
Students (acting as a teacher
(must explain the sentence with actions and the students following him/her must
act to follow the given instruction.
·
Encourage them to add more
words in the box and make sentences/instructions.

(Note: if the students are
new to these words then first make them learn and practice the words with
actions and then move on to sentences)
Development
Activity 1
·
Instructions: Make the students work in pairs and ask them to
match the parts to complete commands. Then ask them to practice the commands in
pairs with action, expressions and proper tone.
·
Call some pairs to perform a
command with action, expressions and proper tone.

Activity 2
·
Tell students the kind of
story feelings he/she has.
·
Then ask some students what
kinds of strong feelings they have.
·
Then ask for the special
qwords/sounds that show strong feelings (e.g. Hurrah! Aah! Ouch!
Wow! Ooh!)
·
Ask them to make sentences on
these words and say with expressions.
·
Write some correct sentences
on the board and then let them write in their notebooks.
·
Some examples:
o Ooh! Math lessons are so boring!
o Wow! We have won the game!
o Outch! The plate is hot!
o Wow! These children are so cute!
Activity 3
·
Explain the students that
there is another way of expressing strong feelings with “what” and “how”.
(“what” is used for countable things and “how” is used for uncountable things)
·
Ask the students for more examples after you explain the given
examples:

Sum up / Conclusion
·
Ask the students to share the
different kinds of sentences they learnt and what they show.
Assessment
1.
Write any 2 sentences showing
instructions.

Write any 2 sentences showing
commands.
3.
Write any 2 sentences showing
strong feelings.
Follow up
·
Anything related to the
taught concept present in the textbook, must be practiced by the students.
