English Grade V

Students’ Learning Outcomes

·         Spelling and punctuation.
·         Pronoun-antecedent agreement.
·         Subject -verb agreement.

Information for Teachers

·         Spellings: The process or activity of writing or naming the letters of a word.
o   The way a word is spelled.
o   A person's ability to spell words.
·         Punctuations: Punctuation marks are signs that are used to aid the clearness and understanding of written language. Some common punctuation marks are as under:
o   Comma: use a commas before a conjunction (and, but, or, yet, so)
o   Use commas to separate adjectives. E.g. thin, handsome.
o   A period (.) comes at the end of a statement.
o   A question mark (?) comes at the end of a question.
o   An inverted comma (““) is used to highlight something or some saying.
·         A pronoun is a word that substitutes a noun in a sentence. Common pronouns comprise he, her, him, I, it, me, she, them, they, us, and we
·         Antecedent is a word for which a pronoun stands. ( ante = "before") The pronoun must agree with its antecedent in number. Rule: A singular pronoun must replace a singular noun; a plural pronoun must replace a plural noun.
·         The antecedent of a pronoun is the word that the pronoun refers to. ... A pronoun and its antecedent should agree in number (i.e. both singular or both plural) ...
·         The verb-subject agreement: the verb must always agree with its subject. Like as single subject=single verb, plural subject=plural verb.

Material / Resources

Chalk/marker, board, textbook

Worm up activity

·         Write the following sentences on the board and ask the students to copy on their notebooks.
·         Tell the students to read carefully and write these sentences again.
·         Put in full stop, capital letters, commas, apostrophes, inverted commas, exclamation and question marks.
1.       Sabras doll was lost yesterday
2.       Amana lives in Pakistan 
3.       Alas they met an accident
4.       Hiram said I offer all my prayers
5.       Hassan Feisal  Tasha and   Amid are selected for the competition
6.       Did you notice Asher’s rude   behavior
7.       The teacher said always speaks the truth.
8.       Monitor and help the students
9.       Ask the students randomly to tell the answers and ask the students to make corrections in their notebooks.

Development

Activity 1

·         Write the following paragraph on the board and ask the students to copy in their notebooks.
       Once apon a time their live a man  she  once caled  hers sonz n ask us do you love each othr they all said yes the men sain ah this is what me want always be united love each other and never fighted it is yours fathers wish.
·         Tell the students to work in pairs or in small groups and spot the mistakes and correct them.
·         Monitor and help the students.
·         Once they are finished with the activity, ask the students randomly to tell the answers.
·         Ask the students to rewrite the story.

Activity 2

·         Ask the students to write a short story of their own.
·         Tell them to be careful about spellings, use of grammar, pronouns, punctuation and capitalization.
·         Monitor and help the students while working.

Sum up / Conclusion

·         What are pronouns?
·         What are the rules of simple present tense?
·         Where do we put comma, question and exclamation marks?

Assessment

·         Draw the following box on the board and ask the students to copy in their notebooks.
·         Tell the students to exchange and check each other’s work by using the provided checklist.
·         Students will correct their mistakes in the light of the feedback given by their peers.
