English Grade V

                                           Students’ Learning Outcomes

                                               
·         Demonstrate use of subject – verb agreement according to person and number.

Information for Teachers

·         Subjects and verbs must agree with one another in number (singular or plural). Thus, if a subject is singular, its verb must also be singular; if a subject is plural, its verb must also be plural.
·         Subject verb agreement simply means the subject and verb must agree in number. This means both need to be singular or both need to be plural.
·         The subject of a sentence can be singular (one) or plural (many)
·         The verb form can be change depending on whether the subject is singular or plural.
e.g. the computer (singular subject) is (verb) old.
The computers (plural subject) are (verb) old.
·         The verb must always agree with its subject. Such as single subject = single verb, plural verb=plural verb

Worm up activity

·         Write the following sentences on the board and ask the students which one is correct. Do ask for the reason why one is right or wrong. Such as we like swimming. We likes swimming.
·         Briefly revise “verb” and “subject”  then explain the following”
·         The verb must always agree with its subject.
Single subject = single verb, plural subject = plural verb

Activity 1

(Present Tense Subject – Verb Agreement)
Instructions:
·         Explain the rule and the following table to the students and ask them to fill in the blanks.
·         Use the following structure to form the students – verb agreement in the present tense

He / she / it                   [verb + “s” or “es”]
I / you / we / they           [verb]
·         Write the correct verb form in the following sentences:
1.       I _______ (are, am) happy
2.       Rice ______ (taste, tastes) good with chicken.
3.       He _______ (are, is) wearing a blue shirt.
4.       Rashid ______ (plays, play) tennis.
5.       Jamaal _______ (am, is) a good student.
6.       Cars __________ (take, takes) people from one place to another.
7.       You _________ (has, have) a nice smile.
8.       Tania _________ (use, uses) a spoon to eat.
Expected response:

(Past Tense Subject – Verb Agreement)
·         Explain the rule and the following table to the students and ask to fill in the blanks.
·         Use the following structure to form subject-verb agreement in the past tense.
Subject + [verb with “ed” ending]

·         Write the correct verb form in the following sentences:
1.       I ________ (was, were) happy yesterday.
2.       He ________ (are, was) wearing a blue shirt last night.
3.        Rashid _______ (plays, played) tennis this morning.
4.       We __________ (was, were) late for the school yesterday.
5.       The students _________ (studied, studies) before the test yesterday.
6.       You ____________ (was, were) on time in the meeting.
7.       It _____________ (rain, rained) this morning.
8.       Saba _________ (was, were) having a good time until she lost the game.

Activity 3

·         Change the nouns and verbs in these sentences from singular to plural. E.g. the street is very crowded  (singular noun and verb)
·         The street is very crowded. (plural noun and verb)
1.       The computer in the office upstairs has crashed.
(Singular noun and verb)
2.       The car was parked along the road.
(Singular noun and verb)
3.       Our neighbor is always so friendly and helpful.
(Singular noun and verb)
4.       The mechanic does full a full service on all cars.
(Singular noun and verb)
·         5. The flat was built ten years ago.
           (Singular noun and verb)

Sum up / Conclusion

·         Ask and discuss with the students what have they learnt in the lesson.

Assessment

·         Ask the students to choose the right verb form in each of these sentences, so that each verb agrees with its subject.
·         Circle the right verb form to make each verb agree with the subject.
1.       So many people is/are waiting outside.
2.       The office next door was/were closed all day.
3.       Two cars and truck was /were involved in the motorway accident.
4.       The bouquet of flowers has/has just arrived.
5.       Good preparation is/are needed for success in exams.
6.       A book, three pencils and a sharpener is/are found lying in the ground.

Follow up

·         Anything related to the taught concept present in the textbook, must be practiced with the students.
