Lesson Plan of Types of Electric Circuits (Parallel & Series Circuits)

General Science Grade VII

Students’ Learning Outcomes

·         Define current.
·         Make parallel and series circuit.
·         Investigate about types of circuits, used for different purposes.
·         Identify the disadvantages of series circuit.

Information for Teachers

·         Electric Current: Flow of electrons passing through a conductor per second is called electric current. It is measured in Amperes (A) or mille ampere (mA).
·         Circuit: The path followed by the current is called circuit.
·         Basic components: Basic components for an electric circuit are battery, key/switch, bulb and connecting wires.
·         The electric components may be connected in two ways; series combination and parallel combination.
·         The types of circuit: There are basically three types of circuit 1. Series, 2 parallel, 3 series and parallel circuit.
·         Series circuit: in a series circuit, charge has only one path through which it can flow. If one bulb burns out in a series circuit, it becomes an open circuit. The bulb in series circuit is a source of resistance. Adding bulbs to a series circuit increases the resistance. The current decreases and each bulb shine less brightly.

Material / Resources

Development

Sum up / Conclusion

        Q1. What is series circuit?
(Expected response: When two or more bulbs are connected one after the other in such a way that
A same current flow through all the bulbs is called series circuit.
        Q2. What is parallel circuit?
(Expected response: When two or more bulbs are connected to each other in such a way that the
Current flows through different paths are called parallel circuit).
·         When the circuit is open (either by opening the key, broken wire, fused bulb or exhausted cell) the bulb doesn’t glow.
·         The current flows only when the circuit is closed.

Assessment

1.       What is the function of a switch?
(Expected response: To open or close the circuit)
2.       Name the source of electrical energy in the circuit.
(Expected response: Cell or battery)
3.       Metal wires are used as connecting wires. Why?
(Expected response: Metals are good conductor of electricity)
4.       Name the electrical equipment in the house.
(Expected response: Bulb, Tube light, Fan, T.V., Computer, Air conditioner)

Follow up

·         Draw circuit diagrams to connect three bulbs in various ways and observe the characteristics.
