·         The following are the points of difference between the direct method and translation method:
Direct Method
Grammar Translation Method
The direct method insists upon speech from the beginning
The direct method avoids close association between the mother tongue and the foreign (English) language
The direct method follows the child’s natural way of learning a language
The direct method teaches a language by use and not by rule, So it opposes the teaching of formal grammar
Doesn’t favor the teaching formal grammar at the early stage
but the translation method lays no emphasis on speech

The translation method maintains close association between the second language and mother tongue.
