Calendar, Class Timetable and Report Card for ELT
Grade VI, VII, and VIII.
Students` Learning Outcomes
- Locate
specific information in a calendar, a class timetable and a report.
Information for Teachers
- ‘Across’
means: left to right direction. ‘Down’ means: from top to bottom.
- A year,
occurring once every four years, that has 366 days including February 29 as an
additional day is called a Leap year.
- A part
of a finger at a joint where the bone is near the surface, especially where the
finger joins with the hand;
- While
teaching the lesson, consult textbook at all steps at wherein and whenever it
is applicable.
Material/Resources

Calendar
of the year, class timetable, writing board, chalk/marker, duster, photocopies
of worksheets (if possible, otherwise write on board and ask students to copy
in their notebooks.)
Introduction
- ·
Close
your hand and make a first. Ask the students to follow you with this.
- ·
Tell
them about knuckles. Tell them how you can use knuckles to calculate the days
of the month.
- ·
Now
rhyme a poem to help them understand this.
- ·
Rhyme
to remember number of days in each month:
30 days has
September,
April, June, and
November
When short
February’s done
All the Rest has
31.
Thirty days hath
(has) September,
April, June, and
November,
All the rest have
thirty-one
February has
twenty-eight,
But leap year
coming one in four,
February then has
one day more.
Make a fist of your
hand.
Tell them the
following:
If the month is on
a knuckle,
It has thirty one
days. Otherwise, it has
Thirty or less than
thirty
Starting with the 1st
knuckle as January,
The space between
knuckles as February,
2nd
knuckle is March….etc.
Once you get to the
fourth knuckle, July,
Start over at the
first knuckle for August.
Count the months
having thirty (30) or
Thirty one (31)
days. January, March,
May, July, August
and October,
December, all come
on knuckles so have
31 days. The rest
of all months, between
The two knuckles
have 30 or 28 days

Development
Activity 1
- ·
How to
read the across information (when the box is made representing left to right
direction it is called ‘across’)
- ·
How to
read the information (When the box is made representing top to bottom direction
it is called ‘down’)
- ·
Sow a calendar
of a month (e.g. February) to the students. Ask the students to think about
‘across and down’ information about the month (draw the calendar on a chart
paper as it will save time). Give them a few minutes to think.
- ·
Ask:
“Have you thought over the information given across and down on the calendar?
Which information is ‘across’ and which one is down the calendar?”
- ·
Answer:
across-left to right (days of the week and dates), down – top to bottom (one
day, dates record).
- ·
Ask the
class to clap for the students who answer correctly, or say “Well done” to
encourage them.
- ·
Give
them the following questions, for written work, to be done in notebooks:

Which
month of the year is it?
(February)
2)
Which
date and day of the week is Sara`s Birthday?
(Tuesday, 3rd February)
3)
Write
the date when students will appear for English paper. (23rd
February)
4)
When
will students visit the zoo? (Thursday, 26th February)
5)
What
has been planned on 18th February? (math’s test)
6)
How
many days are there in February? (28)

Discuss
with the students their class timetable in the same way, Refer to the class
timetable and answer the sample questions given below:

Tell the
information across the table.
- ·
Answer:
period 1-8 and every day period wise plan with each teacher`s name also.
- ·
Tell the
information down the table.
- ·
Answer:
individual periods plan for 6 days and teachers` names record as well.
- ·
Count and
tell how many periods of Maths are there in one week, in your timetable.
- ·
Count and
tell how many periods of English are there in one week, in your timetable.
- ·
Count and
tell how many periods of Urdu are there in one week, in your timetable.
- ·
Count and
tell how many periods of G.Science are there in one week, in your timetable.

Ask students
to clap for the students or say “well done”, if the answers are correct.
Sum up/ Conclusion
- ·
Ask students
to write the names of the months which have 30 days and also the months having
31 days in their notebooks.
- ·
Also ask
them to write down the name of the month that has 28 days.
- ·
Ask them
to use the way of knuckles in case of difficulty.
- ·
Once they
do it, appreciate them and ask students to share their responses. The best
student must be provided with a star cut out, made of newspaper or plain paper.
- ·
Ask students
to look into the calendar and write down the embers of their family in their
notebooks. Ask them to write their date and day of birth as well.
Assessment
- ·
Assess students`
responses. Provide support if necessary.
- ·
Involve
the student’s in solving the problems given in the exercise at the end of
unit/chapter.
Follow up
- ·
A similar
lesson plan can be conducted the following day for reading information from
report card.
- ·
Ask the
students to look at their report card and answer the following questions:
- ·
How many
marks did they score in English?
- ·
What was
their overall percentage in Urdu?
- ·
What was
their overall percentage in class?
- ·
