  • Summarize a short folktale through gaped summary.

Information for Teachers

  • A folktale is a traditional story passed from generation to generation usually by oral retelling.
  • The important parts of the story are beginning, middle and end.
  • Stories derived from popular culture are usually passed on orally or words of mouth legends shared among cultural communities, is called folktale
  • A folktales usually have animals that act as people and has a lesson or moral.
  • A summary is a brief statement or re-expression of the main points, especially as a result of the study: a summary of the chapter. The summary is a detailed summary with the main topic and the main topic of the discourse (usually valid) that needs to be resolved: a summary for discussion.
  • The summary is usually just one or two paragraphs, so you do not have to look at the whole text. ... Spaces are words taken from text - so you can find them even if you do not know the meaning of all the words! Spaces are usually in the order in which they appear in the original text are called Gapped Summary. .
  • Selection of a folktale is very important. The folktale should be selected keeping the students` backgrounds in mind. The folktale should not be insensitive towards any student of the class. Gapped summary is when students read a text. Students then read a summary of the same text, from which key words have been removed. Their task is to write the missing words, which can only be written if the students have both read and understood the main ideas of the original text.
  • While teaching the lesson, consult textbook at all steps wherein and whenever it is required.

Material/Resources

Writing board, chalk/ Marker, duster, sample story, and textbook

Introduction

  • Ask students:

  1. What are different elements of a story?
  2. What is a setting in a story?
  3. What is character in a story?

  • Students should be able to answer these questions as they have studied these characteristics of a story.
  • Tell the class that they will learn to summarize a new kind of story called ‘folktale’.
  • Tell students that what a folktale is. Tell them names of some folktales told in our culture, for example: Mullah Nasreddin, Rustam and Sohrab, Hatim Tai, etc.

Development

Activity 1

  • Tell the class a folktale (you can use the sample folktale or you can select a folktale from textbook.)
  • Ask the class;

  1. Was the story interesting?
  2. What was the best part of the story?
  3. Discuss the story briefly.

  • Make six columns on the writing board.

  • Tell the class that by answering these six things we can write summary of a story.
  • Fill each column with the help of students. If students find it difficult to answer any part, help them recall the story.
  • Now write the summary in complete sentences on the writing board. Ask students to read it aloud and then write in their notebooks.

Activity 2

  • Clean the board. Ask students to close their notebooks. You can also collect students` notebooks.
  • Tell students that you will write the summary again but with blanks/gaps.
  • Tell them that they will have to fill in the blanks/gaps.
  • Write Gapped Summary on the board.
  • Write the summary with gaps under the heading.
  • Fill in the gaps with the help of all students. If they tell correct word, appreciate them. If they tell incorrect word, ask them to recall told story.
  • After the activity, explain gapped summary to students.
  • Ask them to write the gapped summary in their notebooks.

Sum up/ Conclusion

  • Conclude the lesson by asking students;

  1. What is a folktale?
  2. What is a summary?
  3. What is gapped summary?

Assessment

  • First give students summary of a folktale to read. Tell the meanings of difficult words. Then, give them the gapped summary of the same summary. Ask them to fill in the gaps.
  • Involve the students in solving problems given at the end of unit/chapter of the textbook.  

Follow up

  • Give a gapped summary of a short folktale to the students. The students will read the full folktale and fill in the blanks in the the gapped summary of a folktale.
