The Community Language Learning Methods and its Advantages and Disadvantages

Community Language Learning (CLL) is the name of a method developed by Charles. A. Curran, an expert in consulting at Loyola University of Chicago. Experiences of Curran, which led him to reach at the conclusion, that counseling techniques can be applied to learning in general. In general language, counseling is a person who gives advice, help and support to others who have problems or somehow need them. At CLL, teachers take on the role of counselors and treat students like their clients.

Goals of teacher in CLL

1.      1. Teacher should use its language communicatively.

2.     2.  Learning about their self-learning.

3.    3.   Taking responsibility.

4.      4.  The teacher and students should Share the knowledge from each other.

The role of teacher in CLL

5.  Tutoring in CLL is what is known as popularity. The CLL procedure can be defined as follows:

1.    6.   A group of learners sit in a circle with the teacher standing outside the circle;

2.     7.  A student whispers a message in the native language (L1);

3.     8.  Here in C.L.L.The teacher interprets it into the target language (L2) of the learner`s.

4.     9.  The students repeats the message in the target language in to a voice recording device;

5.     1.  Students compose further messages in the target language with the teacher’s help: and finally,

6.    11.   Students reflect about their feelings and upon the messages exchanged during the language class.

CLL associates innovative learning tasks and activities with more traditional ones in the classroom.

CLL Basic Principles

1. Language is important for communication. Teachers should build relationships with students from the beginning. Describe each task so that students do not feel threatened in any way. Interaction between students is highly expected so that the Teacher can stand behind the room.

2. Personal learning: The best way to learn another language as a whole is through trust, support and cooperation between teachers and students.

3. Learning is dynamic and creative: Learning is a process of life and development.

4. Language is important for communication in community based circle of the teacher..

5. Teachers should build relationships with students from the very beginning.

6. Explain each task so that students do not feel threatened in any way /

7. Interaction between students is highly expected so that the Teacher can stand behind the room.

8. Teachers can translate pieces to help students.

The role of students in CLL

C. L.L. Comparing language learning with human developmental stages;

Stage 1: the student is like a baby, relying entirely on people with knowledge of linguistic content. students`new selves are created or born in the target language. students repeat statements made by the teacher in the target language and "listen" to changes in interactions between other students and thos who know.

Stage 2:  in this stage Children get freedom from their parents. Students begin to build self-assertion and freedom to use simple phrases and sentences they have heard before.

Stage 3: Students called separate levels of existence begin to understand others directly. In the target language, students will be angry with the uninvited help given by knowing parents / parents at this stage.

Stage 4: can be considered as a type of puberty. Although knowledge of the target language is still primitive, students learn independently. At this stage, students learn from people who know advanced language knowledge from people who know.

Stage 5: is called the free level. Students improve their understanding of recording as well as the correct use of language in terms of grammar.

Advantages of the Community Language Learning Methods

1. It is comparatively easier to drive or conduct.

2. 3.It creates opportunity to gather facts and figure from the group interaction, which concentrate on the topic of the researcher`s interest.

Disadvantages of the Community Language Learning Methods

1.   1.    It is not based on a natural atmosphere.

2. 2. The researchers have less control over the data that are generated.

3. 3. It is not possible to know if interaction in group he/she contemplates or not the individual behavior.

4. 4. The data analyses are more difficult to be done.

5. 5.  It demands interviews carefully trained.

6. 6. It takes effort to assemble the groups.

7. 7. The discussion should be conducted in an atmosphere that facilitates the dialogue.

8. 8. It required of teachers who are skilled in the field of linguistic.

9.9. One more disadvantage is that the CLL approach concentrates on fluency but not accuracy to achieve the target. .

110.CLL approach doesn`t focus on errors reduction but instead creates a situation where learners are left using their own devices to solve their communication problems.

1111. The learners may produce incoherent, grammatically incorrect sentences.
