Lesson Planning of Masculine, Feminine and Neuter Pronouns

Students` Learning Outcomes

  • Recognize that pronouns agree with their nouns in gender and number.

Information for Teachers

  • A pronoun must agree with its noun in number and gender.
  • Use a singular pronoun to refer to a singular noun, as;

The mother is cooking dinner for her children. (Mother –singular noun, her-singular pronoun)

  1. Use a plural pronoun to refer to a plural noun, as;
  2. Ayesha and Asma are playing with their younger sister. (Ayesha and Asma-plural nouns, their-plural pronoun)

  • The masculine gender pronouns he, his and, him are used for male, as;

  1. The man is driving his new car. (Man- masculine noun, his masculine pronoun)
  2. Fahad and Adnan are in same class but Fahad does n`t like him. (Adnan masculine noun (object), him masculine pronoun (object)

  • The feminine gender pronouns she and her, are used for females, as;

  1. The old woman is walking with her granddaughter. (Woman –feminine noun, her feminine pronoun)

  • The neuter pronoun it and its, are used for non-living, common gender, and for male and female animals, as; the cat is playing with its kittens. (Cat-neuter gender noun and its neuter gender pronoun)

  1. Apple is a delicious fruit. It is good for health. (Apple-neuter gender noun, it neuter gender pronoun)
  2. If a noun is masculine, its pronoun must always be masculine.
  3.  If a noun is feminine, its pronoun must always be feminine. 
  4. If a noun is singular neuter, the pronoun ‘it’ is used. If a noun is plural neuter, the pronoun ‘they’, ‘their’, ‘them’ are used.

  • Note: students have learned about pronoun gender and number agreement in previous grades. Therefore, this is a revision lesson.
  • Time allocation for all activities is flexible and can change as per need of the activity.
  • While teaching the lesson, the teacher should also use textbook at all steps where and when applicable.

Material / Resources

Writing board, chalk/marker, duster, textbook

Introduction

  • Start the lesson by asking students: as;

  1. What are pronouns?
  2. What are masculine nouns?
  3. What are feminine pronouns?
  4. What are neuter nouns?
  5. Are he, his, him, masculine pronouns or feminine pronouns?
  6. Are she, and her, masculine pronouns or feminine pronouns?
  7. Which pronoun is used for neuter gender?

  • Encourage students if they give correct answers.

  1. If students give incorrect answers, explain to them the correct answers (for reverence see ‘information for teachers’).

  • Ask them if they have understood.
  • Make three columns on the writing board like this:

Feminine Pronoun

Neuter Pronoun

He plays football with his friend

She is busy with her friend

It is a cat. Its color is black.


  • Reinforce that pronouns must agree with their nouns in gender (see information for teachers)
  • Tell the class that pronouns must also agree with their nouns in number (see information for teachers above)
  • Draw two columns on the writing board like this:

  • Write a sentence on the writing board. Underline the noun and ask the students if the noun I singular or plural. Ask them to look at the gender of the noun. The examples are given below, as;

  1. Saad plays cricket. He goes to the playground every day. (Singular noun & pronoun)
  2. Saad and Saud play cricket. They go to the playground every day. (Plural noun & pronoun)
  3. Sadie knows English. She likes to speak English (singular noun &pronoun)
  4. Sadie and Amber know English. They like to speak English. (Plural noun & pronoun)
  5. Mother and I go to the market. We buy things. (Singular noun& pronoun)
  6. Mother goes to the market. She buys things (singular noun& pronoun)

  • Circle the pronoun and ask the students if the pronoun is singular or plural (students can look at the two lists of pronouns on the writing board. For help)
  • Ask them if the gender of the pronoun is same as the gender of the noun. (Pronoun number agrees with its noun in this example)

For example:

  1. Wahid is fixing his bicycle (singular noun & pronoun)
  2. Aima and Aliya are playing football with their friends. (Plural noun & pronoun)
  3. They have found their book. (Plural noun & pronoun)
  4. This is my book. (Singular Pronoun)
  5. We enjoying with our balls. (Plural pronoun)
  6. The boys are reading their books. (Plural; noun & pronoun)

Development

Activity 1

(Number Agreement)

  • Write the sentences on the writing board. (see the sample at the end of the lesson plan.)
  • Explain to the students that they have to recognize the underlined pronoun in each sentence as singular or plural. Also write singular or plural in front of it.
  • Write one sentence on the writing board. Discuss it for students` understanding.
  • You must monitor students` work and provide help.

Activity 2

(Gender Agreement)

  • Ask students to take out their textbooks.
  • Open the chapter that students have to read in class.
  • Read the chapter with the students.
  • In the end, choose various gender pronouns (his, her, he, she, and it) and ask the students about their gender.
  • If time allows, ask the students to find the noun of each pronoun. Once they have identified the nouns, ask the students the gender of the nouns.
  • Ask the students if there was any pronoun whose gender was different than its pronoun.

Sum up/ Conclusion

  • Quickly review the lesson by asking the students if a noun is masculine singular, which pronoun is used?
  • If a noun is singular feminine, which pronoun is used?

  1. What is a neuter pronoun?
  2. What is a masculine and feminine pronoun?

Give example:

  1. If a noun is plural, which pronoun is used?

  • Find the exercise related to the topic in the textbook. Students must do this exercise in the notebook or on the textbook.

Assessment

  • Check students` ability to recall the singular, plural, masculine, feminine and neuter pronouns learnt earlier in the introduction activity.
  • Assess how well the students recognize that pronouns agree in number. Students have to choose the correct choices from activity 1.
  • Assess how well students` recognize pronouns gender agreement in the activity 2.
  • Assess students` understanding of pronouns gender agreement by giving them a short oral or written test.
  • Students can read a passage from the textbook and can underline the pronouns.
  • Students can be asked to make sentences using masculine (singular / plural) and neuter pronouns.

Follow up

  • Write 5 sentences on the writing board and ask students to copy them in their notebooks.
  • Explain to the students that they have to rewrite the sentences by changing the gender of the nouns and pronouns. Tell them when they change the gender of noun and its pronoun, they must be same.
  • Identify the nouns and pronouns in the sentences given below. Write if the sentence is singular or plural. If the noun and pronoun are singular, change them into singular, as;

  1. Boys are playing in the playground. They love to play there (Plural noun and pronoun). Boy is playing in the playground. He loves to play there.
  2. The girl likes to eat an apple. She eats it every day.
  3. The toy is liked by him.
  4. They like cars.
  5. I love to light a candle.

Answers: as;

2. Singular Noun and, Pronoun, The girls like to eat apples. They eat them every day.

3. Singular Noun and Pronoun, The toys are liked by them.

4. Plural Noun and Pronoun, He/ She likes car.

5. Singular Noun and Pronoun, We love to light candle.


Activity 1

Read the sentences given below and write if the underlined pronouns are singular or plural.

  1. Doctors always try to save the life of their patients.
  2. I am not well today.
  3. Saad and Salman are good friends. They try to help each other.
  4. We must try to help old people.
  5. Aliya is happy because she got a chocolate from her mother.

 

 

Activity 2

Read the sentences given below. Choose the best option where noun must agree with the pronoun. Underline the pronoun as well.

  1. When (Amir, Aliya, cat) slipped on the step, he fell.
  2. The (doctor, doctors) gave their opinion about the patient.
  3. The (cat, cats) are eating their dinner now.
  4. The (cups, cup) is in its box.
  5. (Sara, Sara and Sana) rode their bicycle today.
  6. After they saw the puppet show (he, they) went home.
  7. The (tree, trees) have lost their leaves.
  8. (Aliya, Omer and Aliya) always try to be helpful to her class fellows.
