Students` Learning Outcomes

  • Write ordinal numbers from first to twentieth

Information for Teachers

  • The ordinal numbers are similar to the actual numbers they represent.
  • Ordinal numbers state a position or place where something is with respect to others, as; in a race with three students:

  1. Someone comes in first place.
  2. Someone comes in second place.
  3. Someone comes in third place.

  • While teaching the lesson, the teacher should also consult textbook at all steps wherein and whenever it is applicable.

Material / Resources

Writing board, chalk/marker, duster, numbers cards, used calendar pages, ruler, pair of scissors, glue/gum, ordinal number cards first to twentieth

Introduction

  • Divide students into four groups.
  • Give used calendar pages to the groups.
  • Ask each group to cut the numbers from 1 to 20 from the calendar pages.
  • Ask them to cut 20 squares from the calendar pages and paste the number on these square pieces to prepare number cards.
  • Now ask the following question to the students, as;

  1. Which month is the first month of the year? Continue up to 12th month.
  2. Which day is the first day of the week? Continue up to 7th day.

  • Also write on the writing board, as;

  1.                          1st January
  2.                          1st Monday

Development


Activity 1

  • Have 20 students line up in two groups parallel to each other.
  • Ask them to call out their number as 1, 2, 3, 4...20.
  • Hand them the number cards jus prepared
  • Give the ordinal number cards to the second group
  • Ask every student to call out his or her number
  • Ask student from the second group to stand beside him or her and raise the corresponding ordinal number card

Fist for 1

Second for 2

Third for 3 and so on.

 

Activity 2

  • Distribute a sheet containing 20 circles or draw 20 circles on the board in different sizes in a sequence from smaller to bigger.
  • Ask the students to color the ninth circle. As them to raise their sheets to show the coloring.
  • Repeat with random ordinal number up to 9th till the entire circles are filled.
  • Ask each time how did you know that it is the right circle to color? (We counted from left to right to no. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9.
  • Point to the 10th circle then ask what number is this? 10- What is the position? (10th) continue up to 20th circle, then ask the students to repeat ordinal numbers  1st------20th

 

Activity 3

  • Ask students to organize games, e.g. races etc. to determine who comes 1st, 2nd, 3rd.
  • Practice 1st – 20th giving students ordinal number cards and asking them to arrange themselves in sequence.

 

Sum up / Conclusion

  • Conclude that ordinal numbers show the position of the object in relation to other objects in the group.

Assessment

  • January February   March April    May June July   August   September October November December

  1. The second month of the year is…………………….
  2. The fifth month of the year………………………….
  3. Which month comes before the fifth month?
  4. Draw two columns on the board
  5. Draw some objects in first column in a sequence

  • Ask the students about its position in the group
  • Write the position in the second column
  • Teacher is required to involve the students in solving the problems given in the exercise at the end of unit/chapter
