Lesson Planning of Bar- graph and Line Graph

Subject Mathematics

Grade 4th

Students` Learning Outcomes

  • Read and interpret simple bar-graphs given in horizontal and vertical form.
  • Read and interpret line graph.

Information for Teachers

  • A visual way of recording information, a diagram or drawing representing a collection of data is known as graph. ‘Data means the information that is gathered by counting, measuring, asking questions or observing’.
  • A graph using bars to show quantities or numbers so that they can be easily compared is called bar-graph. A bar-graph uses horizontal or vertical bars to represent data.
  • In bar-graphs, the widths of all bars are equal and draw at equal distance from each other.
  • If the bars are along horizontal axis, then this graph is called “horizontal bar-graph”.
  • If the bars are reflected along vertical axis, then this graph is called “Vertical bar-graph”

Horizontal Bar-Graph &

Vertical Bar-Graph

  • In the line graph information are represented by “dots” joining with each other and it is used within period of time.
  • In line graph information are continuously represented by dots and these dots are joined by the line segments which show the increase and decrease in the values.

Material / Resources

Writing board, chalk/marker, duster, prepared coloured charts / posters of bar and line graphs, textbook

Introduction

  • Show posters or charts of horizontal and vertical bar-graphs and line graphs to the students, like the following, as;
  • Explain the data shown in these graphs.

Development

Activity 1

  • Show the following bar-graph in which Adnan`s marks of different subjects in Grade 4th are reflected through vertical bar-graph.
  • Ask students to observe it carefully and complete the table given below.

  • Subjects

    Obtained marks

    Mathematics

    Science

    English

    Urdu

    Islamiat

  •  Divide the class into groups and ask them to discuss the graph and the table.
  • Ask the groups of students: as;
  • How many marks Adnan obtained in Mathematics? (The expected answer would be as; 50)
  • Mention the highest marks in the graph and also tell the subject. (The expected answer would be as; Islamiat 80)
  • Mention the lowest marks in the graph and also tell the subject. (The expected answer would be as; English 45)
  • From the graph, tell the difference in the marks of English and Urdu. (The expected answer would be as; 25)

Activity 2

  • Show the following line graph in which temperature on different days of Lahore city has been reflected.
  • Ask students to observe it carefully and complete the table given below, as;

  • Ask the students: as;
  • What is the temperature on Tuesday? (The expected answer would be as; 360C)
  • What is the temperature on Wednesday?(The expected answer would be as; 320C)

  • Note: Encourage students on providing appropriate answer.
  • Make the following table on board and complete it with the help of students.

Sum up / Conclusion

  • A visual way of recording information, a diagram or drawing representing a collection of data is known as graph. Data means the information that is gathered by counting, measuring, asking questions or observing.
  • A graph using bars to show quantities or numbers so that they can be easily compared is called bar-graph. A bar-graph uses horizontal or vertical bars to represent data.
  • If the bars are along horizontal axis, then this graph is called “Horizontal bar-graph”.
  • If the bars are reflected along vertical axis, then this graph is called “Vertical bar-graph”

Assessment

  • What is the purpose of graph?
  • What is the difference between Bar and Line Graph?
  • What is the difference between horizontal and vertical bar-graph?
  • Is width of bars of bar –graph equal?

Follow up

  • Draw a graph between of 5 students` marks obtained in Mathematics, writing students` name on horizontal and their marks on vertical lines.
  • Assign questions from the textbook.
