Lesson Planning of Number Operation (Addition)

Subject Mathematics

Grade II

Students` Learning Outcomes

  • Add numbers up to four digits (with and without carrying) vertically and horizontally.
  • Solve real life problems involving addition.

Information for Teachers

  • Students have solved the problem up to 3 digit number with and without carrying.
  • They know units, tens, hundred are added in unit, tens and hundred respectively.
  • Add carry in next place digits.
  • Now add thousands in thousands.
  • While teaching the lesson, the teacher should also consult textbook at all steps wherein and whenever it is applicable.

Material / Resources

Writing board, chalk/marker, duster, ball frame, balls of different color, Match sticks

Introduction

  • Ask students to solve the following questions
  •                                                         i)  1+4 + 5 =

ii)  2+ 6 + 2 =

iii)  4 + 6 + 3 =

iv)  7 + 3 + 5 =

v)  6 + 5 + 9 =

vi)  5 + 5 +5 =

Development

Approach

Activity method (demonstration, questioning answering technique, storytelling)

Activity 1

  • Tell the story to the students.
  • “Ali has two sons, Ahmad and Aslam. They work in a factory. Ahmad earns Rs 4,522 and Aslam earns Rs 3.466 monthly. Find the total income of both”.
  • Ask from the students to read the story carefully.
  • Ask the following questions to the students.

  1. How many sons Ali have? (Expected answer would be as; Two)
  2. Where do they work? (Expected answer would be as; in a factory)
  3. What is the earning of Ahmad? (Expected answer would be as; Rs 4522)
  4. What is the earning of Aslam? (Expected answer would be as; Rs 3466)
  5. What we have to find total income? (Expected answer would be as; Rs 4522+ Rs 3466 = Rs 7988)
  6. How we will find total income? (Expected answer would be as; will add the both amount)

  • Ask one student to write on the board the Ahmad`s income.
  • Ask another student to write Aslam`s income under the Ahmad`s income as under;

Th          H       T       U

                             4           5        2         2

                          + 3            4       6          6

                                                           __________

  • Ask 3rd students to show the first number on the ball frame.
  • Ask 4th student to show the 2nd number on the ball frame.
  • Ask 5th student to write the number counting total balls on the ball frame.

  • Ask the students to read the number aloud.

  1. What is the total income of Ahmad and Aslam?

Activity 2

  • Divide the class in four groups.
  • Assign them the work and provide ball frame.

G1            G2           G3      G4

 5648         6458       4685     2577

+3574       +2757     +4347  +6545

___________________________

  • Ask them to solve by discussing in their groups using ball frame. Teacher will facilitate them.
  • Ask them to present their work in front of class.

Sum up / Conclusion

  • Teacher will ask what you have learnt to day.(Expected answer would be as; we add unit, tens, hundreds or thousands and then thousands)
  • After adding units, tens, hundreds if we get more than 9, 1 is added in the next column as a carry.

Assessment

  • Write the story on the board.
  • “In a cricket match 1st day came 4568 people and 2nd day 5370 people to see the match, find how many people came altogether”?
  • Ask them to solve.
  • Teacher is also required to involve the students in solving the problems given in the exercise at the end of unit / chapter

Follow up

  • Convert the given mathematical statement into story ad draw ball frame, as;

6378

+2764

  • Write it on your note book / chart
