Lesson Planning of Types of Line

Subject Mathematics

Grade 4th

Student’s` Learning Outcomes

  • Measure length of line in centimetres and millimetres by using ruler and divider
  • Draw a straight line of given length by using ruler.

Information for Teachers

  • Steps for measuring length of a line segment by divider:
  • Divider: open the divider so that its two edges touch each end of the line.
  • Place one side of the divider in front or on the mark zero of the scale.
  • Read the mark where the other side of divider is touching the scale.
  • Record your observation.
  • During this lesson, the teacher should also consult textbook wherein and whenever it is required.

Material / Resources

Writing board, chalk/marker, duster, wooden geometry box, one chart paper cut in small strips and one line of different length drawn on each, one chart paper cut in small strips with different measurement written on each, as;

Introduction

  • Measure the length by using divider.
  • Recall the use of ruler with students.
  • Draw different lines on board and identify straight lines with the help of students.
  • Erase the board and then through wooden scale measure length of any object around, as; chair or table legs or notebook sides.
  • Introduce the topic of measuring length.

Development

Activity 1

Activity with a ruler / scale:

  • Ask all students to take out their rulers / scale and read the points on it.
  • Let them recall and repeat what they learned in 3rd grade about measuring lengths with ruler.
  • Draw their attention to the small marks between the centimetres and introduce the term millimetres.
  • Ask them to measure the length of their geometry boxes or books and collect their responses.
  • Some students might be able to do. Then give your input as follows: as;
  • Keep the ruler along the side of geometry box which you want to measure.
  • Make sure that the zero of scale lies along the starting point of the side to be measured.
  • Read the scale. The number with bigger line shows centimetres.
  • How many centimetres is your ruler?
  • Count the small lines after the centimeter reading you got, that how much they are?
  • These numbers are millimetres.
  • Hold a pen in your hand and demonstrate its length of measurement with a ruler. Explain the measurement procedure to the students, as; the length of my pencil has got big lines till 8 and 7 small lines, hence, its length is 8 cm and 7 mm
  • Repeat the steps with any other small object so that they are clear.
  • Ask students to get ready for work in pairs.
  • Distribute the cardboard strips to each of the pair and ask them to measure its length and write on strip as cm, mm.
  • Ask the students to exchange work with the pair sitting next to them and ask them to check the work done.

Activity 2

MEASURING WITH A DIVIDER:

  • Esquire students about the use of divider.
  • Demonstrate how to measure by using divider as mentioned in information for teachers.
  • Ask students to get ready for the activity, “Do as I say!”
  • Repeat the steps verbally.
  • Ask them to perform all the steps on the cardboard strips you have already given to each pair.
  • Ask if the measurement is the same as before?
  • Students will attempt questions from the book individually and announce the answers to the whole class.

Activity 3

DRAWING LINE WITH RULER:

  • Invite student on the board to review whatever is done up till now.
  • Take the wooden scale and draw a line of 15 cm on the board and ask how many of them can draw a line of 5 cm on their copies. (Just to provoke their interest).
  • Say each of the steps in key point loudly and perform each of it on board.
  • Ask students to repeat the steps with you for the same figure done on board.
  • Distribute the strips with measurements written and ask them to draw lines on the strips. Also ask them to write their names. Announce the limit.
  • Then collect the strips to be checked by you.
  • Assign them different questions like 3 cm, 6 mm, 4 cm, 7 cm, 20 mm etc. and announce the time limit.
  • Ask them to recheck their lengths by using divider and scale.
  • Ask them for peer checking.
  • Announce to measure the length of their any family members index finger.
  • Next day, return the strips with encouraging remarks, as; wrong attempts write the steps for correction by student.

Sum up / Conclusion

  • Compass is used to draw circles or arcs
  • Set-square is used to draw parallel and perpendicular lines.
  • Protractor is used for drawing different angles.

Assessment

  • Prepare a worksheet with some questions for examples; as;

  • Measure the length of side AB and CD of the given pictures / frames /cuttings

  • Teacher should also involve the students to solve exercise at the end of chapter in the textbook.

Follow up

  • You can take any news-paper cutting or photos or pictures from anywhere to let the students measure the lengths.
  • Measuring the pictures or lines from textbook will increase their understanding and application I real life. It will enhance their estimation about lengths of any object as well.
