Students` Learning Outcomes

  • Understand and locate some compound words from various text sources.

Information for Teachers

  • Compound words are formed by joining two or more simple words to create a new word with a different meaning, as; ‘air + plane’ = airplane, play + ground = playground
  • Compound words are words that are formed from complete words and not prefixes or suffixes: week + end = weekend but week + ly is not a compound word.
  • Studying compound words is fun, helps students understand the language, builds an interest in words and will help prepare students to learn prefixes, suffixes and word roots.
  • While teaching the lesson, the teacher should also consult textbook at all steps where and when applicable.

Material / Resources

Writing board, chalk/marker, duster, textbook, notebooks

Introduction

  • Tell the students that today you are going to help them learn a trick to increase their vocabulary

  • Remind them addition sums and signs of + and =.
  • Introduce compound words to the students by writing following words as sums;

  1. Star + fish = star fish
  2. Cup + cake = cupcake
  3. Rain + water = rainwater
  4. Rain + drop = raindrop

  • Write the following words on the writing board or make flashcards of these words, as; playground, breakfast, lunchbox
  • Ask the students to break up these words to make two different words e.g. lunch and box.
  • Tell the students these words are compound words with the help of above mentioned information
  • Ask them to look up more compound words from their textbook (Note of teacher: please select an appropriate text with compound words from the textbook, which itself is a compound word.

Development

Activity 1

  • Write the following exercise on the writing board and ask the students to copy in their notebooks.
  • Tell them to work in pairs and combine the word on the left with another word in the list to make a compound word.

1. Hand +_________    (End, day)

  • Compound word: Weekend

2. Sun + __________ (shine set flower)

  • Compound word:  Sunshine set flower

3. Bed + ________   (room)

  • Compound word: Bedroom

4. Butter + ______   (fly)

  • Compound word: Butterfly

Activity 2

  • Ask the students to copy the exercise in their notebooks.
  • Tell them to work in pairs and identify the compound words, as;
  • Handshake, suitcase, beehive, bedtime, newspapers

  1. Shake hands: _______________
  2. Time for bed: ______________
  3. Paper filled with news ________
  4. Bees live in ________________
  5. Pack cloth in this ___________

Conclusion / Sum up

  1. What are compound words?

  • Tell some compound words.

Assessment

  • Write the correct answers on the writing board and ask the students to do the self-correction.
  • Take rounds of the class and ask the students about their scores.
  • Ask the students to write the wrong sentences again.
  • Teacher is also required to involve the students in solving the problems given in the exercise at end of unit / chapter.

Follow up

  • Ask the students to find out five compound words from their English books and make one more word from the root word of that compound word.
