Information for Teachers

• 
  Skills are the natural ability a person should have to perform a particular task. While it is true that a person can be born with certain ability, it is also true that a skill can be developed and must be worked on over time.
• A summary, summary or summary is a shorter version of the original; such simplification highlights the main points of longer topics such as text.
• The standard length of an abstract is one -third (1/3) of the original text, so if the original text is 90 words, the summary will be 30 words.
• The skill summary requires the reader to first read the entire text to identify the main points.
  
• Readers then write a summary containing all the important points in their own words.
• It is important that the sentences come from full paragraphs or units. It cannot be at the point of a bullet.
• Once students learn summary skills, they will move on to blank summaries.
• Summaries with blanks have some words missing, so fill in the blanks. Students should be able to add relevant words. Give them the word bank to choose the word to start it.
• While teaching the lesson, the teacher should also consult textbook at all steps where and when applicable.

Introduction

• 
  Tell the students that summary is shorter and concise version of a huge text.
• Try to recall a story or a lesson you have already taught to them. Summarize the lesson in few lines and tell them that this is the summary of lesson.
  

Development

Activity 1

• 
  Ask the class to open their textbook`s page which you have selected for this lesson. Select a very simple one.
• Read the text in front of the class and ask them to silently read along.
• After you have completed the reading, ask them to write key words of the text on a page and help them in doing so.
• After when you are done with this, jot down the points on the board. ask the class to convert the text in their own words, keeping an eye on the key words. Ask them to use the key words in the summary as well.
• This will help the class to think that key words are really important while doing a summary of the text.
  

Activity 2

• 
  Open another text and ask the class to read the text themselves.
• While they are reading the text, write a prepare summary of the text on the board.
• When they are done with the reading, ask them to read the summary of the text on the board.
• Ask them which words are missing? Ask them to insert the words in the missing places. Provide a word bank / set of missing words in random order.
• Let them read the text again and give some time to them for this.
• Ask them to write the complete summary in their notebooks.
  

Conclusion

• Conclude the lesson by telling them that key words are very important while making a summary of the text. If you are asked to do the summary of a text, you should first locate them key words and then do the summary.

Assessment

• Write the correct set of words on the writing board and ask the class to have a self-assessment
• Teacher is also required to involve the students in solving the problems given in the exercise at the end of unit / chapter.

Follow up

• Give them a text from their text book and ask them to do the summary of the text and bring it to the next class.
