Students` Learning Outcomes

  • Demonstrate use of joining words learnt earlier.

Information for Teachers

  • A conjunction (or a joining word) is a word which connects words and group of words.
  • And is used to join or add words together in the sentence, e.g. they ate and drank.
  • Or is used to show alternatives as in the sentence, e.g. He will be here on Monday or Tuesday.
  • But is used to show opposite or contrast as in the sentence, e.g. She is small but strong.  
  • So is used to show result as in the sentence, e.g. I was tired so I went to sleep
  • Because is used to express reason, e.g. I watch T.V. because I like it.
  • While teaching the lesson, the teacher should also consult textbook at all steps where and whenever it is applicable.

Material / Resources

Writing board, chalk / marker, duster, flash card

Introduction

Activity 1

  • Write some incomplete sentences on the board.
  • Show them the flash cards but, and, so, because, and or and ask them to discuss in pairs and then tell what will complete the sentences.

  • Examples:

  1. I want to play ________     my mother will not allow me.
  2. I think his birthday is on Tuesday______ Wednesday.
  3. Maryam helps her mother ___________ she loves her.
  4. I needed a book ___________ I went to the library.
  5. She eats with a fork _______ a spoon.

  • Explain the function of joining words here. See information for teachers for help.
  • Two or three more sentences could be written on the same pattern with the help of students for their better understandings.

Activity 2

  • Give them five sentences and ask them to underline conjunctions from them. Involve the whole class in the activity.

  1. I love pastries and lollipops.
  2. Give me biscuits and a cup of tea.
  3. I want to buy a new bicycle but I don`t have enough money.
  4. Aliya wants to become a doctor so she is studying.
  5. Asim is intelligent but he is very careless.

  • Here also reinforce / explain the function of and, or, but, so, and because

Activity 2

  • Write the following incomplete sentences on the board and ask the students to copy them in their notebooks and complete them while using and, or, but, so and because.
  • Students can complete the sentences after discussion with their group members.

  1. Amna has a doll _______ a doll`s house.
  2. My grandmother was ill ______ I brought medicines for her.
  3. I need a hair brush _______ a mirror.
  4. He is weal _________ active.
  5. Maria reads books _____ she loves them.

Conclusion / Sum up

  • Ask the students randomly;
  • Tell three of the joining words.
  • Tell a sentence with the joining word so.
  • Tell a sentence with the word because

Assessment

  • Ask the students to write 5 sentences using the conjunctions and, or, but, so, and because. Help them where they need especially with vocabulary.
  • Teacher is also required to involve the students in solving the problems given in the exercise at end of unit / chapter.

Follow up

  • Anything related to this concept should b taught to the students from the textbook
