Lesson Planning of Masculine, Feminine and Neuter Genders

Students` Learning Outcomes

• Classify and change the gender of nouns from immediate and extended environment. (Masculine / Feminine / Common / Neuter)

Information for Teachers

• The masculine gender represents all those of the male kind (boys, men and male animals) such as; man, lion, king, horse, boyfriend, hero, etc.
• The Feminine gender represents all those of the female kind (girls, women and female animals) such as women, lioness, queen, girlfriend, heroine, mare, etc.

• The neuter gender represents non-living things, such as; book, room, gold, silver, iron, knife, shirt, coat, chair, table, tree, etc.
• The Common gender represents either sex, such as; parent, child, baby, infant, friend, servant, thief, enemy, cousin, orphan, student, doctor, teacher, police, neighbor, etc.

Material / Resources

Writing board, chalk / marker, duster, worksheet, textbook

Introduction

• Start the lesson by writing some nouns (male /female) on the board. Ask the students about the gender of each noun.

• Divide the whole class into two teams; A and B
• Draw two columns on the board.
• Write Masculine Nouns on top of one column. Write Feminine Nouns on top of the other column.

• Team A tells ten masculine nouns and team B gives ten feminizes nouns (you can increase or decrease the number according to the time limit for

• 
  this activity)
• Write the nouns as each student says it. If any team gives a wrong noun, the point goes to the other team.
• The team with the higher score wins. The members of the winning team receive colours stars on their class work.
  

Development

Activity 1

• Draw two columns on the board. Write masculine and feminine on top of those columns. Write ten masculine nouns first. Write disordered feminine nouns in other column, (such as man / woman, boy / girl, horse / mare)

• Ask the students to match masculine with feminine gender and write them in their notebooks.

Activity 2

• Clean the board and write ‘Neuter’ on it.
• Tell the students that there is another gender; Neuter ( see the definition in information for Teachers)
• Write a few examples on the board. The following list is given to aid / help the teachers.

• Ask the students to give names of non-living things e.g. school, home, hospital, stone, river, and shop, etc.

Sum up / Conclusion

• Conclude the lesson by repeating what masculine, feminine, common and neuter genders are?

• Ask the students to separate masculine/ feminine / common / neuter from the following word bank.

Follow up

• Ask the students to solve the worksheet.
• Project: Ask children to cut out pictures (I masculine, I feminine, 1 common and 1 neuter noun) from old magazines and newspapers. Paste the pictures in their notebook and label them as masculine, feminine, common and neuter.
