Lesson Planning of Plural of Irregular Nouns

Subject English

Grade 8th

Students` Learning Outcomes

  • Change the number of irregular nouns.

Information for Teachers

  • English Language has seven words that perform very oddly when you change them from the singular nouns to the plural nouns. These are called THE MUTANT PLURALS of English, such as; Child / Children, Man / Men, Ox / Oxen, Woman / Women, Mouse / Mice, Foot / Feet, Louse / Lice, Goose / Geese.
  • There are some nouns that form the plural differently. Some nouns change their vowels in the middle of the singular form, when forming the plural, such as; goose / geese, foot / feet, man / men, etc.
  • Several nouns form the plural by adding the letter –en or –ren, such as; ox / oxen, child / children, etc.
  • There are a number of animals that have the same singular and plural form, such as; deer / deer, sheep / sheep, fish / fish, etc.
  • A scavenger hunt is a game in which the organizer prepares a list of specific items. The participants of the game try to find all the items on the list. The team or individual who completes the list first, wins.

Material / Resources

Writing board, chalk / marker, duster, papers with items listed for the scavenger hunt, coloured paper stars, worksheet, textbook, (if photocopy facility is not available, write the sentences on the board)

Introduction

  • Begin the lesson by announcing that the whole class is going on a scavenger hunt. Explain to the students what a scavenger hunt is?
  • Divide the class into small groups. Give each group the paper with things to be found such as books, pens, pencils, erasers, scales, shoes, etc.

  • Prepare this list before starting the lesson.
  • Tell the groups that they also have to write, on the given paper, the singular or plural of those things. Give 5 minutes for the hunt.
  • The group which gathers all the things and writes the singular or plural fist, win.
  • After the game finishes, tell the students that there are some nouns which make plural differently from all the nouns learnt so far. Tell the class they will learn those nouns today.

Development

Activity 1

  • Tell the students about the nouns that change the middle vowels when pluralized (see the rule in information for Teachers)
  • Write the examples on the board. Underline the middle vowels that change it into a plural form.
  • Similarly tell the class (with examples) about the nouns that take –en in plural forms and the nouns that remain same in both singular and plural forms.
  • Ask the students to match column A with column B.

Activity 2

Activity 3

  • Make pairs of students or divide them into groups.
  • Distribute worksheets among them. (The worksheet is provided here)
  • Ask them to follow the instruction given in the worksheet to do the activity.

Sum up / Conclusion

  • Conclude the lesson by repeating how some nouns form irregular plurals.

Assessment

  • Give the following jumbled up words to the students and tell them to write their plural after rearranging them.

Follow up

  • Ask the students to cut out pictures from old magazines or newspapers and paste them in their notebooks (continued activity from the previous lesson)
  • Ask them to label them with the singular and plural forms. Tell students to paste pictures of the nouns they just learnt in the lesson. You can name this activity as plural book.
