Lesson Planning of Public Notices and Signs

Students` Learning Outcomes

• Apply critical thinking to interact with text using intensive reading strategies (while reading) to:
• Follow instructions in map or short public notices and signs.

Information for Teachers

• This lesson is about reading and writing notices. Make sure that your students know what are notices?
• You need to keep in mind the ages of the students and their interest while selecting the text. Simple text that is relevant to their everyday life should be selected e.g. traffic signals, directions, notices about school procedures such as getting a library card issued, etc.
  
  
  
• While teaching the lesson, the teacher should also consult the textbook where applicable.

Material / Resources

Writing board, chalk / marker, duster, textbook, worksheet with traffic signals signs, flashcards

Introduction

• 
  Tell the class that notices are put in public places often for a good reason. They are concise and clear for everyday to see and do as they are told.
• Tell them that most notices are often written in big colourful letters and many include pictures besides the text.
• Ask them: Do they remember any notices they have seen? If so, which?
• Then write the following list on the board and ask them to think of the places where they could be found.

1. BEWARE OF THE DOGS,
2. NO SMOKING –PLEASE DON~T SMOKE.
3. (PLEASE) DON’T DISTURB.

Development

Activity 1

• Paste instructions in the classroom before the lesson starts. Paper having text “EXIT” should be pasted on the wall above the exit door of the class. Paper having text “PUSH” or “PULL” should be pasted on the door of the classroom. Paste ‘USE ME’ on the dustbin.
• Ask them to see what is written on the signboard pasted outside the door. Ask one of the students to do what is written?

• Now call one student and ask him / her to do the reverse of how the door opens e.g. push instead of pull. Tell them one has to be careful about reading instruction correctly. When they will push / pull, the door will not open or close. Draw their attention to other sign boards placed in the classroom. Ask them to read these signs loudly and also tell their meaning.

1. Keep the class clean.
2. Don`t make noise, etc.
3. Mat at work.

Activity 2

• Ask the students to raise their hands if they know about traffic signals. Make traffic lights on the board and ask any student to come up and label the colours of the lights on the traffic signals.
• Ask the class to tell what we are supposed to do when RED light is on. Ask about the other colors as well.

• After taking their feedback, tell them that RED mean STOP, yellow means START/READY and green means Go.
• Draw other traffic signs on the board like TURN LEFT, TURN RIGHT, and STOP.
• Ask a few students to explain these signs to the whole class.

Sum up / Conclusion

• Conclude the lesson by asking them about other instructions written on public notices and maps correctly.

Assessment

• Ask them what kind of public notices they can see around in their locality. They have studied the maps in one of their previous lessons; ask them about the simple instructions on the map.
• Involve the students in solving problems given in exercise at the end of unit/ chapter.

Follow up

• Ask them to write 5 simple but important instructions which they can see around and share with the whole class.
