Students` learning outcomes

  • Read and use symbols in a picture map.

Information for Teachers

  • The pictures are attached. Draw the pictures on the chart paper and paste them on the board to save time.
  • Students develop critical thinking by looking at the symbols in the pictures to understand the given information.
  • Symbols: They are message code or sign used in place of words / phrases explaining things just by looking at the picture. (Symbols give information about events / things / rules / secrets / maps without involving words), as; traffic signals are the codes and instructions given in the form of an image.
  • Map: it is a plan or chart revealing important information.


  • While teaching the lesson, the teacher should also consult textbook at all steps where and when applicable.

Material / Resources

Writing board, chalk / marker, duster, picture attached at the end of the lesson, notebooks, and textbook

Introduction

  • Revise Traffic Picture Symbols: Draw / paste (Optional) the picture card 1, 2, 3 and 4 for the students and ask them what to do they mean?

  • Appreciate children for their responses.
  • Tell students that symbol is a sign that stands for something. We look at it and understand the meaning attached to it. We look at these symbols and decide what each one stands for or represents.
  • Symbols are important for understanding the information given in the pictures.
  • Signs are very useful as many are universal. This means that all over the world, no matter which country you are in or what language people speak, you will be able to recognize certain signs.

Development

Activity 1

  • Display the flashcards of the following symbols on the board.

  • Ask them: Have they ever seen these signs anywhere?
  • Ask one of the students to tell: What does the sign (A) show?
  • After taking their responses tell them that it shows Parking is not allowed.
  • Repeat the same question with other symbols as well.
  • Appreciate students who give right answers.
  • Explain for those who don`t know about these signs.

Activity 2

  • Divide class in groups.
  • Distribute 4 to 5 flashcards of signs, logos, or symbols to each group.
  • Ask them to discuss how they can read signs, logos, and symbols.
  • They will also discuss how they may know these logos, signs, and symbols from their own home, neighborhood, magazine, advertisement or place that they visited. (Such as store)
  • After that, each group will read its signs, symbols, and logos for the whole class and will also explain them.

  • If they don`t understand any signs, logo or symbols explain to them clearly.
  • Appreciate the groups who will give good presentation

Activity 3

Written classwork:

  • (Get the photocopies of the work sheet give at the end of the lesson for the whole class)

  • Distribute the worksheets to the students individually.
  • Now paste one copy of the given worksheet on the board.
  • Ask students what does these signs and symbols show?
  • After taking their feedback ask them to write tick and cross in the given boxes in the worksheet.
  • When they will be over with that ask different students to tell their answers.

  • Ask them:

  • What are symbols and why do we use them in picture map
    •  assessment
