Observational Language Learning skill
- Education plays an important role in the development of observation from an early age. Current didactic conceives it as one of the intellectual skills that must be developed in students, in such a way that they learn to direct their attention in a logical order, to observe the characteristics or features of objects, phenomena or processes objects of study (general, particular and essential) and that distinguish the most significant qualities as well as the details; what favors that they appropriate their own categories: everything - part, the general - particular - essential, among others.
- The observation must be carried out taking the whole as a starting point, then the elements that make up the given object and its most relevant characteristics are analyzed, followed by a detailed analysis (analysis); then you go back to the whole to integrate the information (synthesis). The ability to observe is an indispensable condition in the algorithm to develop other intellectual abilities; for example: to describe it is necessary to start from a silent observation; To define, first, various characteristics of the object of study must be observed; To compare two or more objects or phenomena, careful observation of their similarities and differences is a special requirement.
- Observation must become a conscious act, which allows not only to see, but to see "intelligently", in such a way that it encourages the search and construction of knowledge by the students themselves. They must also understand the importance of observing for all human activity and as a starting point in the assimilation of concepts, generalizations, and judgments, among others. Within its requirements, the student is required to direct attention to how is what is observed? To the whole, to the parts and to the relationships between the parts; wonder why? Causes and what for? Prove Usefulness and importance of what is being observed.
- The teacher will suggest that the student observe paying attention not only to external characteristics (color, shape, appearance), but also to internal ones (composition, structure) as well as to point out both the quantitative and qualitative aspects.
- The perception and understanding of the material under study constitutes a general teaching skill. Among the tasks that contribute to the perception and understanding of the teaching content, the following can be mentioned: Answer questions whose content is in the textbook. Prepare bibliographic or content files.Summarize data about the content that is listened to by means of boxes or other means.
- Fill in the information in the text in notebooks or notebooks or reproduce their figures. These tasks basically require the reproduction of knowledge; they play an important role as a necessary link in the learning process before moving to a higher stage, that is, to the application and / or production of knowledge to Achieving that the student can apply, from the cognitive point of view, a strategy to learn by himself, that he comes to possess a reflective and critical thinking as part of his intellectual development, is currently one of the most important demands that society has on him. In order to fulfill this aspiration, the achievement of a high development of cognitive skills and within them the ability to observe represents an indispensable condition.
- In the times of information and knowledge, which the world lives today, education emerges as one of the vital strategic resources for the processes of economic and social development that begins the new century. Education not only as the one in charge of its traditional functions of transmitting and acquiring old and new knowledge, but as a pillar in the integral formation of the human being.
- In Pakistan, the audiovisual media as a support to education have rapidly gone from utopia to a palpable reality. The use of these means goes beyond the classroom space and transcends the school environment, which implies the incorporation of these resources into the entire educational process, including extracurricular activities, the school-community relationship and the family education school. The recent use of media such as television, video and computers alone justifies the fact that the ability to observe is given a high priority.
- Television and video serve as integrating elements of other teaching aids: textbook, slide, transparencies, photographs and others. In the use of these means in the educational teaching process, it is essential that the teacher take into account some aspects related to school hygiene such as:
- That the television is located in a place that allows everyone to see it, both due to the height and the entrance of light so If any student has vision difficulties, they must occupy the preferential places. It is advisable that the programs are not observed in the dark, so as not to impair vision and facilitate note taking.
- Auditory perception must be guaranteed by all students, eliminating noises that affect hearing.
- The use of these means provides certain advantages; among them the following can be mentioned:
- Time can be presented in different ways, that is, it allows showing the present, the past, even the future with the use of certain resources.
- The size of the objects can be modified and Displays very small or too large objects on the screen at a different scale for better viewing and Presentation of processes and phenomena imperceptible to the human eye so, Processes such as the formation and growth of an embryo, the germination of a plant, among many others.
- The observation of distant places for Teaching becomes more objective, since it allows us to know the nature of other countries, thus approaching the geographical historical reality, customs and traditions of those countries where the possibilities of dramatizations, through which behaviors, emotions and relationships between people can be shown.
- Orientation to students for observation is a determining factor for the activity to be carried out successfully and therefore guarantee an adequate learning process in students. The way in which the teacher guides the observation of his students towards the material under study can be different, these depend on his initiatives of the domain he has of the content to be observed or the possibilities offered by the material itself. To the extent that the student is better oriented, it can be more useful and enriching for their learning. In this way your attention will be better directed especially towards the essential features and characteristics of the object or phenomenon. All this is achieved through the development of an efficient observation guide, which must be offered to the student before the act of observation, its performance is controlled and finally it is subject to review.
- All of the above leads us to suggest that observation becomes a learning tool.
- It is important to remember that the ability to observe can be learned and become improved with practice. The teachers in training of the 1st year of the Foreign Language career in the Pedagogical Universities, in conditions of overspecialization, must develop this ability because it takes on a relevant significance because it does not only involve the observation of objects, images, and / or sequences of videos but also the observation of the phenomena of the language as an object of study, an example of this is when the similarities and / or differences between the foreign language and the mother tongue are compared, after having acquired it as students, in order to achieve a correct transmission to their future students when they are located in a micro university in their municipality of residence; Another aspect that students in training must observe in their classes are the ways of acting of their teachers and thus make them models of their professional future.
