Lesson Planning of Mechanics of Writing

Students` Learning Outcomes

• Revise written work for layout, legibility, and punctuation.

Information for Teachers

• Tell the students that we always write the following things while doing our written work so that our work looks clean.
• Write the date on one side of the page.
• Write the title / topic in the Center of the first line.
• Draw margins and underline key words. Image template
• Legibility means to write with proper space between the words and correct formation and the same size of the letters.
• Introduce the mark (`) apostrophe`s` to the students. Tell them we use apostrophe to show possession of somebody on something. For example, Ali`s book, Teacher`s name, Amana’s mother, etc.
• Reinforce capitalization and punctuation. For grade III, the following basic punctuation marks needs to be recalled:

1. Full stop
2. Capitalization
3. Speech marks
4. Question marks
5. Exclamation marks.

• Pair checking is very useful technique in which a student checks the work of his/her pair.
• You must carefully monitor the pair work and help the students where necessary. Encourage them to be supportive. They must not make fun of others mistakes.
• While teaching the lesson, the teacher should also consult the textbook where applicable.

Material / Resources

Writing board, chalk/marker, duster, worksheet, charts, textbook

Introduction

• Write some unpunctuated sentences on the board, as such;

• Ask the students what is wrong with the sentences?
• Rewrite the sentence with the help of the students, using the correct punctuation;

Development

Activity 1

Discuss worksheet 1, activity 1, for revision of punctuation marks. 

• Divide the class into groups of four or five students.
• Select a short passage of a story from the textbook. Look for pieces that include dialogue and a variety of sentence structures. You can also give them a worksheet. 
  
  
  
• Give each student a colour pencil red/green. 

• Read the passage aloud to students using the proper expressions for the punctuation marks and paragraph and sentence structure.
• Tell students to underline all punctuation marks in the story with colour pencils.
• Now ask students to read the passage silently with attention to the punctuation marks.
• Ask the students read the passage aloud in their group.

Activity 2

• Write the words and phrases on the writing board and ask the students to read loudly and copy it in their notebooks.
• Ask the students to interview each other in pairs according to the given words e.g. what is your name? 
  
  
  
• By the help of the answers, write a paragraph in your copy.
• Remind them to consult the given word bank for correct spellings and apostrophe use.

Activity 3

• Tell the students that when they are finished with the writing they have to check the work of their pair.
• Tell the students to check each other`s work, as a teacher does.
• Correct

1. Spellings
2. Punctuation
3. Capitalization
4. Legibility

• See where the dates and margins should be.
• Ask the students to encircle the mistakes and write “Sp” for spelling mistakes, “C” for capitalization, “P” for punctuation.
• Monitor and help the students where necessary. Encourage them to be supportive. They must not make fun of others mistakes.
• The teacher must prepare a chart with C, S, and P, written on it. Display it in the class for future use. Encourage students t check the list every time, to see if their work has these problems.

Activity 4

Once the students are finished with the checking, ask them to re-write the paraphrase by correcting the mistakes pointed by their pairs.

• Monitor and ensure that they are correcting their mistakes.

Sum up / Conclusion

• Ask the students to compare both the draft and the corrected version. Ask them which is better and why?

1. What must we keep in mind when writing?
2. How can we make our work good? (Legibility, layout)
3. What happens when we don`t capitalize or punctuate properly?

Assessment

• Collect students` second draft and check it for appropriate layout, legibility and punctuation.
• Involve the students in solving problems given in exercise at the end of unit / chapter.

Follow up

• Ask the students to review previous lessons` work in their notebooks and do the corrections.
