Lesson Planning of Perimeter and Area

Subject Mathematics

Grade 5th

Students` Learning Outcomes

  • The students will be able to
  • Solve appropriate problems of perimeter and area.

Information for Teachers

  • Total measurement of the boundary of any closed shape is called perimeter.
  • Units of perimeter can be measured in meter, centimeter and kilometre.
  • Perimeter can be found by adding all the sides of a shape.
  • Perimeter of Square = 4 x length of side.
  • Area of a square = 2 x length of side.
  • Perimeter of rectangle = 2(Length + Breadth)
  • Area of rectangle = Length x Breadth
  • The area of any closed figure represents the region covered by that shape.

Material / Resources

Writing board, chalk / marker, duster, pencil, paper, ruler, scissors, chart paper cutouts with different shapes and sizes and text book.

Introduction

  • Half coloured piece of two same size bread`s slices of rectangle shape was given to two children as mentioned in following figures.

  • The children who got coloured pieces as per fig (i) they made complaint that the received small piece.
  • Now ask from students

    1. Why coloured piece of fig (i) is looking larger?
    2. Is the area of both coloured pieces same? (Yes)

Development

Activity 1

  • Tell them that today we are going to discuss perimeter and area by solving real life problems.
  • The perimeter of a square shaped room is 40 feet. Find length of each side of it.

    1. How we find the perimeter of a room?

  • By using the formula for perimeter of square we can find the length of one side? (10 feet)
  • The perimeter of a rectangular piece of plastic is 26 millimetres wide. How long it will be?

Length of sides 26 – 6 = 20

Length of all sides = 20 ÷ 2 = 10 millimetres.

  • The length and breadth of a rectangular room is 5 meters and 4 meters respectively. The owner of the hotel wants to carpet the room at the costs of R.s. 20 per square meter. How much carpet is needed and how much will it cost to re-carpet the room?

Solution:

Length of room = 5 m

Breadth of room = 4 m

Area of room = 5 x 4 = 20 m2

Carpet needed = 20 m2

Cost of carpet for 1m2 = Rs. 20

Cost of carpet for 20 m2 = 20 x 20 = Rs. 400

Sum up / Conclusion

  • Tell the students that today we have discussed perimeter and area in variety of ways.
  • Repeat the key points of today`s lecture before end e.g. Square Units, area, perimeter etc.

  • Perimeter is the distance around a closed figure.
  • Area is the space or region occupied by a closed figure.
  • Term area is used for example to carpet the whole room.
  • Term perimeter is used for example to put a fence around the garden.
  • If they find any difficulty in understanding the concept of area and perimeter then Give them more examples to make them understand the concepts of area and perimeter.

Assessment

Individual work:

  • Assign questions from the textbook to be done individually and record for assessment and follow up.
  • Fill in the assessment sheet and display in the class.
  • Involve students to solve the exercise questions given at the end of lesson of text book.

Follow up

  • Assign to the students following type of questions as homework.

Q. Find the area of a rectangle 13 cm long and 9 cm wide.

A.    97 square cm

B.     22 square cm

C.     44 square cm

D.    117 square cm
