- Make a list of items (e.g. vocabulary) required for a given task or topic.
Information
for Teachers
- Vocabulary is a critical factor in the development of reading skills.
- Vocabulary is very important to the students, especially at the early stages as they are motivated to learn new words in the language.
- Teachers can select words for teaching by keeping in mind the following:
- Appropriate to the students.
- Relevance to the task
- How often are the students likely to use / come across the language and can be applied to different situation.
- The students should know the following about the vocabulary items:
- Meaning – what it means
- Use- how / when it is suitable to use
- Spelling- how it is written pronunciation- how it is spoken
- Word grammar- noun, pronoun, verbs,
- There should always be the picture and the word together at this level, both for class display and notebook.

board, chalk / marker, duster, chart / labeled pictures of things and areas in
and outside the home e.g. kitchen, playground, hospital, classroom, chart /
labeled pictures of different food items, like meat, milk, yogurt, vegetable,
fruit, chart paper, pictures by students and teacher, see the sample pictures
at the end of the lesson
Introduction
- Ask the students to think, “What do you see if you go inside a kitchen?”
- Now start calling 3 to 5 students at the same time to draw a thing in the kitchen on the board. ask them to write the name of the thing also in English if they know (expected answer would be as; food, spoons, tap, stove, plates, cups, glasses, etc.)
- Complete writing the names for each picture on the board and help them read correctly. Also discuss briefly the use, shape, size and design of each thing.
- After this, ask them to copy it in the notebook (pictures and words both)
Development
Activity
1
- Divide the class into 4 groups and give a chart paper / paper to each group.
- Give 1 topic to each group:
- Packed food / snacks we want in the school canteen.
- Fresh food we want in the school canteen.
Stationary we want in the school bookshop.
Soft drinks / juices we want in the school canteen.
- Ask the groups to discuss, draw and write the names of the things they need according to the given topic. (They can past the related wrappers or pictures next day).
- Note: The activity can also be done about the things available in the school canteen. It will also work if there is no canteen in the school.
- Check the spellings and show the complete charts to the school principal and the canteen man as a request to provide those things.
- All the students to copy the work in the notebooks after charts are displayed in the classroom.
Activity
2
- Draw 5 columns on the board with underlined heading of different food groups (milk group, grain group, fruit group, vegetable group, meat group)
- Ask the students the meaning of each food group heading.
- Then ask the students to think and tell 3-5 food items for each food group.
- Ask them to get help from their Science books, wrappers of different eatables etc.
- Call 5 students at a time to write and draw one related food in each column.
- Check the students` work side by side and make corrections with the students.
- Ask the students to read the words from the board one by one. Repeat if they read a word wrong. They should be able to read the words correctly.
- Ask them to copy the complete and checked words from the board in the notebooks.
Sum
up / Conclusion
- Ask the students, “What have they learnt during this activity?” “Where else can they use this knowledge?”(Preparing for a picnic, getting stationery for an examination, planning a trip to another city)(Relating every activity / lesson to a real life situation will make learning and remembering easier)
Assessment
- Give the students an event or a food group e.g. Eid, A birthday party, Vegetable or Fruit group. Ask them to make a list of ten items required for the given topic. Give this as a class test.
Follow
up
- Give them a few more topics to brainstorm and come up with relevant words.
- For example, if you say ‘Eid’ what comes to their mind (new clothes, bangles, Mahdi, goat, etc.?)
- Other topics: winter season (warm clothes, nuts to eat, heaters, long nights, cold and flu, etc.)
- Note: The topics can be modified / changed according to the situation and the location.
- Do all the activities given I the textbook about this topic.
