Information for Teachers
- Classification means grouping of things which are similar.
- By classification, the study becomes easy, systematic and organized.
- Living things are divided into two main groups i.e. plants and animals. They can be further classified into different groups according to their “Characteristics” such as eating habits, structure, movements and habitat etc.
- On the basis of these characteristics, we can make groups of like or similar things. We can know the basic characteristics of all members of a group by examining only one member.
Material / Resources
Writing board, chalk / marker, duster,
animals flashcards
Introduction
- Introduce the topic by asking the students to recall what they have learnt in Class-IV. Show them the pictures of different animals and ask them what they know about their eating habits and on that what groups of animals can be made.
Development
Activity 1
- Involve students to identify the characteristics of animals and plants which are helpful for classification. Draw a table on the board and write down those characteristics of animals and plants in the respective columns. Such as;
- What they eat?
- Where they live?

Assessment
1. What do you mean by classification?
2. How do you arrange the materials given to you?
3. Is there any benefit for grouping / classification?
4. Write the names of some animals on the board or show their pictures and ask the students to arrange them into different groups and ask them the reason for putting them together.
