Information for Teachers

Introduction
- Stretch your arms on both sides and ask “Do
you know the position of my arms?” and then introduce the term Horizontal.
- Similarly stretch your arms up and introduce the term vertical.
- Ask students if they have seen the lines on the road and reinforce Horizontal Lines.
- Elaborate that ‘A person standing erect is vertical and a person lying down as horizontal’.
- If you look horizontally at the sky on an early morning, enjoy the sight of the sun in an appeasing red colour and in the evening it is wearing the same red robe again, it is wearing the same red robe again. But at the mid-day we can see the same sun frying us from vertically above our head.
Development
Activity 1
- Ask students to think and write three examples of the horizontal and vertical position of the objects from school, classroom and home anywhere, such as;
- A chair is vertical; the plate on the table is horizontal. Collect their responses in two columns on the board.
- Vertically such as; going up, moving up, raising high and reach the sky and attaining height are some of the words which gives the sense of vertical.
- The senses of opposite direction like; vertical and below are going down. A fruit falling down are to be flashed to the young mind to create the sense of downward direction.
- Demonstrate how to use a set-square to draw a perpendicular to given line, AB.
- With the following steps a set-square can be used to draw a vertical line at a point on a given line as described below.
- Step 1: Draw a straight line of 6 cm (for example) and choose a point P on the line.
- Step 2: Set an edge of the set-square on the given line so that the other edge is just in contact with the point.
- Step 3: Draw a line that passes through the given point with the help of the set-square.
- Step 4: The new line is vertical.
- Ask them to take out their geometry boxes and copies and get ready for an activity.
- Repeat all the steps one by one and ask them to follow instructions.
- Give students time to attempt every step independently.
- Peer Checking (exchange work with person sitting next and then return copies) should be done.
- Invite one student on board to do it once again.
- Reinforce the whole concept with the whole class in a recap session.
Sup up / Conclusion
- Conclude the lesson with briefly revise the concept.
Assessment
- Assign question to be done individually followed by peer checking.
- Prepare a worksheet to assess two concepts together;
it will raise their confidence in attempting questions.
Follow up
- Identify the position of objects vertically
and horizontally in your way to school from your home.
