LESSON PLANNING OF PERCENTAGES

Subject Mathematics

Grade 5th

Students` Learning Outcomes

  • Recognize percentage as a special kind of fraction.
  • Convert percentage to fraction and to decimal and vice versa.

Information for Teachers

From Percent to Decimal:

  • Percentage to convert from percent to decimal: divide by 100,and remove the “%” sign. The easiest way to divide by 100 is to move the decimal point 2 places to the right. So:

From Decimal to Percent:

  • Percentage to convert from decimal to percent: multiply by 100, and use a “%” sign. The easiest way to multiply by 100 is to move the decimal point 2 places to the right. So:

From Fraction to Percentage:

  • The easiest way to convert a fraction to a percentage is to divide the top number by the bottom number.
  • Then multiply the result by 100, and use the “%” sign.
  •  Example: Convert 3/8 o a percentage

o   First divide 3 by 8:    3  ÷  8  =  0.375

o   Then multiply by 100: 0.375  x  100  =  37.5

o   Use the “%” sign: 37.5%

o   Answer: 3/8 = 3.5%

From Percentage to Fraction:

o   To convert a percentage to a faction, first convert to a decimal(divide by 100), then use the steps for converting decimal to fractions (like above)

o   Example: To convert 80% to a fraction;

Consult textbook when and where required.

Material / Resources

Writing board, chalk / marker, duster, textbook

Introduction

  • Write on the board ‘%’ and ask if they have ever seen this symbol before? And what is the meaning of %?
  • Collect their responses.
  • Tell them that it`s a special form of fraction which is 1 / 100.
  • Collect responses along with the reasons of choosing one fraction on the other. Appreciate the closer one. Also inquire the silent member as what are they thinking?

Development

Activity 1

  • Tell the students that Decimals, Fraction and p[percentage are just different ways of showing the same value.
  • Show them the following chart:
  • Draw a half circle and ask the following questions:

o   What do we call this? [half circle]

o   What fraction and what decimal does it represent? [1/2] [0.5]

o   How did you get 0.5? [1/2 x 5/5 = 5/10 = 0.5] [done in previous lessons]

o   What do I do to convert ‘2’ of this ½ into 100? [hint: 50 x 2 = 100]

o   Yes! Multiply both parts of fraction with 50, will give us 50/ 100.

o   Encourage students to respond.

o   Ask 1/100 is what? [%]

o   Deduce with the help of students that 50/100 is 50%.

Activity 2

  • Draw a quarter circles and invite students randomly to present as fraction, decimal and percentage.

Activity 3

  • Make the proper groups of students.
  • Ask each pair takes a loose sheet and cut into 10 equal strips.
  • Ask them to label fraction, decimal and percentage.
  • Let the try and explore on their own.[1/10,, 0.1, 10/100 or 10%]
  • Encourage the students.
  • Each strip cut into 10 small squares. How many small squares?
  • Ask how many total small squares? [100]
  • Pick 45 small squares and pile on one side. Now Present as fraction as decimal and as percentage.

Activity 4

  • Give few questions from textbook and solve on board with the help of students.
  • Encourage students.
  • In the given figure unite down the coloured in friction for.

Activity 5

  • Provide the following worksheet in groups and ask the students to fill in the blanks.

Sum up / Conclusion

  • From Percent to Decimal: To convert from percent to decimal: divide by 100, and remove the “%” sign. The easiest way to divide by 100 is to move the decimal point 2 places from right side to the left.
  • From Percent to Decimal: To convert fro percent to decimal: divide by 100, and remove the “%” sign. The easiest way to divide by 100 is to remove the decimal point 2 places from right side to the left.
  • From Decimal to Percent: To convert from decimal to percent: multiply by 100, and use a “%” sign. The easiest way to multiply by 100 is to move the decimal point 2 places to the right.
  • From Fraction to Percentage:  The easiest way to convert a fraction to a percentage is to divide the top number by the bottom number. Then multiply the result by 100, and use the “%” sign. Example: Convert % to a percentage. First divide 3 by 8: 3 ÷ 8 = 0.35, then multiply  by 100: 0.375 x 100 = 37.5 use the “%” sign: 37.5^ Answer: 3/8  = 37.5%.
  • From Percentage to Fraction: To convert a percentage to a fraction, first convert to a decimal (divide by 100), then use the steps for converting decimal to fractions (like above)

Assessment

  • Write each decimal as a percentage:
  • Write 20% in decimal fraction.
  • Convert the fractions into percentages and percentages into fractions.
  • Assign questions from the textbook for individual work.

Follow up

  • Give questions from the textbook for homework.
  • Tell what part of the circle is shaded?
  • Tell what part of the square is shaded?
  • Tell what part of the star is shaded?

  • Tell what part of the rectangle is shaded?
