  • Figure of speech is a word or phrase that possesses a separate meaning g from its literal definition. Figures of speech are used to produce a rhetorical effect. Some common figures of speech are as follows;

Similes:

  • A simile is a figure of speech in which like or as is used to make a comparison between two ideas that are basically dissimilar.

Examples:

i.                    Her eyes twinkled like stars.

ii.                  He is as busy as bee.

iii.                You are as brave as a lion.

iv.                He is as strong as an ox.

Metaphor:

  • If we write a comparison between two things and omit the word ‘like’ then we are using metaphor.

Examples:

i.                    He proved a lion in the fight.

ii.                  His heart is red, red rose.

iii.                The snow is a white blanket.

iv.                He is a shining star.

v.                  The calm lake was a mirror.

Personification:

  • It is a figurative language technique where an object or idea is given human characteristics or qualities.

Examples:

i.                    The candle flame danced in the dark.

ii.                  The sunflowers nodded in the wind.

iii.                Look at my car. She is beauty.

iv.                Time and tide wait for none.

v.                  The fire swallowed the entire forest.

Alliteration:

  • Alliteration refers to the repetition of the same consonant sound in words which are used closely together.

Examples:

i.                    Whose woods………

ii.                  His house…….

iii.                See me stopping.

iv.                She sells seashells by the sea-shore.

v.                  Can you keep the cat from clawing the couch?

Imagery:

  • Imagery is the construction of details used to create mental images in the mind of the reader through the visual sense as well as the sense of touch, smell, taste or sound.

Examples:

Visual:                                huge trees in the thick and dark forest.

                                              It was dark and dim in the forest.

Auditory:                            the rustling of leaves

                                               The children were screaming in the fields.

Smell:                                   scent taste sweet juicy oranges

                                               He whiffed the aroma of tea.

Touch:                                  rugged of rough path

                                                The girl ran her hand on the soft satin fabric
