Material / Resources

Writing board, chalk / marker, duster, thermometer, paper strips cut and folded as question strips given below, textbook

Introduction

• Recap what we did in the last class.
• Which city was the hottest yesterday? [Ask different students from the 3 cities they have chosen for checking]
• What was the temperature in ⁰ F and in ⁰ C?
• Do you know about different types of the thermometer that are used? 
  

Development

Activity 1 

• Write the following question:

Group work:

• Split the class into groups.
• Distribute the question slips, two per group.
• Let them discuss the problem in specified time. [Tell that any group can be called]
• Ask them to present their problem and solution to the class.

Sum up / Conclusion

• Share some history: There are two main ways of measuring temperature. One is called Fahrenheit (the name of the man who invented it) and the other is called Centigrade (meaning 100 degrees). They measure the same thing, only they start counting at different temperatures and the size of the degrees is different (Centigrade degrees are bigger than Fahrenheit degrees).
• Fahrenheit is used only in the United States. In Fahrenheit, the water freezes at 32 degrees and boils at 212 degrees. Normal human body temperature is 69.6 degrees Fahrenheit
• Centigrade (which is also called Celsius after the man who invented it) is used everywhere else in the world. In Centigrade, the water freezes at 0 (zero) degrees and boils at 100 degrees
• Normal human body temperature is 37 degrees Celsius or centigrade
• Discuss the word problems which you observed difficult during group presentations.
• Recall the formulae for unit conversion with the whole class.

Assessment

• Individual Work:

Do questions from the textbook in present time.

Then write the Questions on the paper slips.

• Teacher must involve the students in solving the exercise questions given at the end of the lesson.

Follow up

• Give the questions from the textbook
• Ask students to make 2 word problems of their own by using the information about temperature and write on two separate strips of paper. (Homework)
• Next day swap the strips. The students will paste the strips (which they will get) in their copies and solve the problem.
