Lesson Planning of Conversion of Units of Lengths (Km into M)

Subject Mathematics

Grade 4th

Students` Learning Outcomes

  • Convert Milometers into meters and vice versa.

Information for teachers

  • Kilometre and meter are units of measurement and can be written as km and m respectively.
  • Kilo means one thousands, therefore kilometre means one thousands meters.
  • Kilometre is used to express distance between cities and countries in most of the world except United States and the United Kingdom.
  • 1 kilometre = 1000 meters
  • Multiply kilometres with 1000 to convert them into meters (Meters = km x 1000)
  • Divide meters by 1000 to convert them into kilometres (km = m/1000)
  • During this lesson, the teacher should also consult textbook at each level where required.

Material / Resources

Writing board, chalk / marker, duster, measuring tape, meter rod, scale, flash cards, textbook

Introduction

  • Tell the students that today we will learn how to convert kilometres and meters into each other.
  • Tell them that hundreds of years ago, people used stones, wooden pieces, bones, hands and feet to measure.
  • Ask the students have they ever heard about ‘kilometre and meter’?  (Share with class)
  • Give some daily life examples related to the topic, as; length of cricket bat is normally equals to a meter.
  • Unit ‘kilometre’ is used to measure distance between two cities, as; Lahore is 425 km far from Bahawalpur.
  • While buying cloth for you, your parents normally use word “meter” e.g. 6 meters cloth.

Development

Activity 1

  • Write on the board: 1 kilometre = 1000 meters.
  • Which unit is greater? Kilometre or meter (Expected answer would be as; kilometre)
  • We will convert greater unit to smaller and smaller unit to greater, as; Conversion from Kilometres to meters:
  • Distance between Lahore to Bahawalpur is 425 km.
  • We can find this distance in meters too.
  • kilometres can be easily converted into meters simply by multiplication, as;
  • 1 km = 1000 m.
  • Distance between both cities = 425 km
  •  m = km x 1000
  • Distance between both cities in meters = 425 km x 100 = 42500m

Conversion from meters into kilometres:

  • Now give another example to the students about conversion of meters into kilometres.
  • Difference between Lahore and Multan is 250000 m. Convert this distance in to kilometres?
  • It is quite easy by dividing meters with 1000. (km = m/100)
  • Distance between both cities = 25000 m
  • Distance between both cities in kilometres = 25000/1000 km = 250 km

Activity 2

  • Write more examples on the board to further strengthen the students` concepts.
  • Explain to students that while converting kilometres of decimal numbers into meters simply move decimal point three places right, as;

5.7 km = 5700.0 or 5700 m

5.72 km = 5720.0 or 5720 m

15.72 km = 15720.0 or 15720 m

  • Explain further to the students that while converting meters of decimal numbers into kilometres simply move decimal point three places left, as;

2.3 m = 0.0023 km

2.36 m = 0.00236 km

22.36 m = 0.02236 km

Sum up / Conclusion

  • Finish the lecture by revising the key points of today`s lecture so students can recall what they have learnt.
  • Tell them as; 1 km = 1000 m
  • Kilometres can be converted into meters by multiplying with 1000, as m = km x 1000.
  • Meters can be converted in kilometres by dividing with 1000, as; km = m/1000.
  • In decimal numbers to convert meters into kilometres move the decimal point 3 places left., as 2.5 m = 0.0025 km.
  • In decimal numbers to convert kilometres into meters move the decimal point 3 places to the right, as; 3.7 km = 3700.0 m or 3700 m

Assessment

  • Spread four flash cards having kilometres written on them on the table.
  • Call four students one by one and ask them to pick the flash cards.
  • All the four students will turn wise show their cards to the whole class.

  • Spread four more flash cards on the table having written meters on them related to the kilometres on previous cards.
  • Ask them as you have already learned about conversion of units of measurement, so pick the relevant card of meters.
  • Encourage the students for correct answer.
  • Solve the following.

Follow up

  • Assign following types of questions to the students as homework. Encourage correct answers and guide them if they produced wrong answers.
  • The distance between mosque and school is 5 km. convert this distance in meters.
  • Karachi express train covers 60000 m in one hour. Can you convert this distance in kilometres?
  • My family is moving to a new house. Our old house is 3 km from the new house. How many meters is the old house from the new house?
  • The fence around Bono’s garden is 360 m long. How much is the length of the fence in kilometres?
  • The teacher should involve the students to solve the exercise questions given at the end of the unit/chapter.
