Students` Learning Outcomes

  • Use alphabetical order (first and second alphabet to arrange words)

Information for Teachers

  • Alphabetical order (a, to z) helps develop dictionary reading skills.
  • The selection of the words should be from the students` vocabulary. The list should be made by the students.
  • Write the names of all the students in alphabetical order in the class register before this lesson.
  • While teaching the lesson, the teacher should consult the textbook at all the steps where it is needed.

Material / Resources

Writing board, chalk / marker, duster, dictionary, class attendance register

Introduction

  • Call any 5 to 7 students in front of the class. Teacher needs to call carefully the students with the first letter different in their names.
  • Make them stand in front of the board, facing the class.

  • Write the first letter of their names on the top of the head on the board.(as shown in picture)
  • Now ask the class to sing / say a to z letter song.
  • Make the class stop if you find any letter matching on the board. Keep writing the letters in order below the previous written letters.
  • Now ask the standing students to stand under their names` first letter which are in alphabetical order.
  • Ask the class to check if they are standing in alphabetical order or not. If they aren`t, ask them to arrange accordingly.
  • Now tell the class that the attendance register is also made in the same way. Show them the register and show the names of some students.
  • This will describe the concept of alphabetical order as well.

Development

Activity 1

  • Point out that when two names begin with the same letter then we decide on the basis of second word order e.g. Ali Saad and Ali Wahid. Similarly when there are two words starting with the same letter we decide the order on the basis of second letter e.g. deer, duck.

Activity 2

  • Write the following full names on the board (or the same names from your own class).
  • Help them a little to arrange the names and understand the concept.
  • Sample is given at end of activity.
  • Ask them to copy the work in their notebook

Activity 3

  • Ask the students to give a list of seven words.

  • Write the words on the board.
  • Call the students one by one to arrange the words in alphabetical order.
  • Guide them when they make mistakes.
  • Take help from students also.

Activity 4

  • Ask the students to tell 6 words starting with the letter‘s’ (or any other letter). They can tell the words from the lesson they are studying from the textbook.
  • Write the words on the board.
  • Help them in arranging the words in alphabetical order with the help of second letter because the first letter is the same in all the words. Help the students to on the board and ask them to copy the words in the notebooks.

  • Ask the students to arrange the following words in alphabetical order and write in their notebook.
