Lesson Planning of Reading Strategies

Subject English

Grade 3rd

Students` Learning Outcomes

  • Apply critical thinking to interact with text using intensive reading strategies (while reading) to:
  • Predict what follows in the text using context and prior knowledge.
  • Use context to infer missing words.
  • Use context to infer missing words.

Information for Teachers

  • Context is defined as the background information about the setting, time, place / location and characters of the story. Or text that helps the reader understands the events and language better.

  • Prior knowledge of the students depends on their personal experiences, knowledge gained through observation and, experiences in our outside the class.

  • Inference means making an intelligent guess where the words or information is not given.
  • While teaching the lesson, the teacher should also use the textbook at all steps where it is required.

Material / Resources

Writing board, chalk / marker, duster, worksheet, charts, textbook

Introduction

  • Show the students a photograph or a picture from a magazine, newspaper, calendar or a textbook.
  • Ask the students to work in pairs and guess what has happened before the scene they see in the picture ad what will happen afterwards.
  • Ask them what helped them decide the scenes before and after the picture.
  • Tell them that the things that they kept in mind to judge what happened before and after are the context.

For example:

  • If the picture shows one village boy laughing, the previous scene can`t be that they have just come out of a cinema and they are laughing at the movie. The context is a village, and that helps us guess the picture was taken.

Development

Activity 1

  • Teacher can use the sample text or a text from the textbook. He /she can distribute the text copies to the students. If the teacher has less copies, divide the class in groups and give them the copies.
  • Ask them to read the text carefully.

  • Ask the students to raise their hands and guess what follows in the text using their previous knowledge and the context which they read.
  • Let the students share their views.
  • Appreciate the students.

Activity 2

  • Teacher can make a worksheet or write the paragraph on the board. it will contain a story (almost the same as the appendix text) and there will be some words missing in it.
  • Ask the class to read the text in groups.
  • Ask them to infer the missing words by using context. The missing words should be from their existing vocabulary list.
  • Allow the students to attempt it in groups or pairs. Teacher can help and guide them.

Sum up / Conclusion

  • Conclude the lesson by asking the students:

      1. What is your opinion about the text that you have read?
      2. How did you guess what will happen next?

  • Appreciate different responses.
  • Tell the class that they can guess the text by using their previous knowledge and they can also infer the missing words through the use of context. This will help them in future.
  • Ask the students:

      1. Has anyone ever challenged you or made fun of you?
      2. How did that make you feel?

  • Find the exercise related to the topic in the textbook. Students must do this exercise in the notebook or on the textbook.

Assessment

  • Read a text from the book and ask the class to predict what will come next.
  • This will help the class to guess while listening to something.
  • Or use the following text for the formal assessment of the students.
  • Read the passage and fill in the blanks with the most suitable word.
